St. John’s will look to nab another quality road win before the start of the postseason
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2019) – After securing a bye to the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship with a win over DePaul on Saturday night, the St. John's Red Storm will wrap the 2019 regular season with a Wednesday night road showdown against Providence. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Mike Mancuso and Ashely Liotus on the call.
While the Red Storm (13-2-1, 6-1-1 BIG EAST) has secured its bye and is locked into the no. 2 seed in next week's BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship, the Johnnies will still have plenty to play for when they take the pitch on Wednesday night. First and foremost, the Red Storm can still grab a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season title with a victory over the Friars should Creighton prevail over Georgetown earlier in the day. Kick-off between the Hoyas and Bluejays is set for 1 p.m. in Washington. The Red Storm has won six BIG EAST Regular Season Championships in its history, the second highest total in league history. The team's six wins in conference play are the most in a single season for the program since 2009.
A win over the Friars (11-5-0, 5-3-0 BIG EAST) would also go a long way in helping the Red Storm shore up its NCAA Tournament seeding. The NCAA selection committee released its top 16 rankings on Friday night before the Red Storm beat DePaul and Dr. David Masur's squad checked in at no. 7. The Friars, who enter the contest with an RPI of 30, present the Red Storm with an opportunity for yet another quality road win. Using the latest version of the RPI released on Monday, St. John's already possesses victories on the road against no. 27 NC State, no. 32 Butler and no. 51 Creighton. The Red Storm's only losses of the season have been at Maryland and at home against Georgetown, who rank no. 22 and no. 1, respectively, in the RPI.
St. John's scored four goals in a game for the third time during conference play with its 4-2 win over DePaul on Saturday night. Tani Oluwaseyi led the way offensively once again, earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after tallying a goal and an assist against the Blue Demons. Oluwaseyi found the back of the net for the 10th time this season, becoming the first St. John's player since Simone Salinno during the College Cup campaign of 2003 to reach double figures. The sophomore from Mississauga, Ont., ranks 25th nationally in total goals and 28th in total points (24) through games played on Sunday.
Freshman Jared Juleau also made his presence felt on multiple goals against the Blue Demons, assisting on the Red Storm's first two markers of the game while drawing the foul that led to the third on a penalty kick. Skage Simonsen also registered his team-leading sixth assist on Oluwaseyi's opening goal. Five of Simonsen's six helpers this season have been on goals scored by Oluwaseyi.
Providence has also already locked in its seed for the BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship, as the Friars secured third place with a come-from-behind road win at Xavier on Saturday evening. Trailing 1-0 with time whittling away, the Friars scored twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation to win their third straight match. Since starting BIG EAST play 1-2 with losses to Georgetown and Butler in back-to-back games, Providence has won five of its last six contests.
The Friars will host the sixth seed, which has yet to be determined, on Saturday afternoon at Anderson Stadium. The Johnnies will then welcome the winner of that game to Belson Stadium on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. Both of those games will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The conference championship game will take place on Nov. 17 at 12 p.m. and will air live nationally on FS2. The site of the game will be the home stadium of the higher seed.
Providence is led offensively by fifth-year senior Joao Serrano, whose four goals and five assists have given him a team-high 13 points. Junior midfielder Davis Smith, who stands at 6-foot-7, has four goals and four assists while the team's leading scorer, Paulo Lima, boasts five markers and one helper.
St. John's and Providence will meet for the 33rd time in the history of the two programs on Wednesday night, a series history that favors the Red Storm by a margin of 20-8-4. Despite the Johnnies' historical success, the Friars have owned the series of late. Dating back to 2013, the first year of the realigned BIG EAST, Providence is 6-0-1 against the Johnnies.
From 1989 to 2009, the Red Storm went undefeated in 23 consecutive matches against Providence, including a 15-game winning streak from 1989-2004.
2019 marks the fifth straight year that St. John's and Providence have closed out the regular season against one another.
