St. John’s Ventures to Brown for the Bear Invitational

The Johnnies are one of five programs competing this weekend in Providence, R.I.
QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 7, 2019) – The St. John's men's tennis team will play its final fall tournament of the season this weekend at the three-day Bear Invitational, hosted on the campus of Brown University.
The Bear Invitational will consist of mini-duel matches (4 singles, 2 doubles) throughout the weekend. St. John's is one of five programs competing in Providence, R.I., facing institutions such as Brown, Bryant, Dartmouth, and James Madison. The host Bears will have two sets of teams competing this weekend.
The competition will begin for the Red Storm on Friday at 5:30 p.m., squaring off with Brown 1. The Johnnies are scheduled to battle with Brown 2 on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
The three-day slate will come to an end on Sunday when the reigning BIG EAST Champions take on Dartmouth at 11 a.m.
The Johnnies are coming off of a successful weekend at the Army Invitational as Head Coach Dillon Pottish's squad registered a total of 24 wins out of 31 matches at the Lichtenberg and Malek Tennis Centers.
St. John's got off to a hot start last weekend, beginning the tournament with a 3-0 sweep in doubles play over Holy Cross. The Johnnies wrapped up play on Friday winning four of its seven singles matches against opponents from Army West Point.
The Red Storm claimed a combined three victories in doubles play over Monmouth and Stony Brook to begin day two of the invitational. Ignacio Garcia and Charlie James swept their match on the No. 1 court over Stony Brook's Malmberg/Rivolo. Louis-nils Michel and Giuseppe De Camelis teamed up to defeat the No. 2 duo from Stony Brook, 6-3.
St. John's lone doubles win over Monmouth also came from Michel and De Camelis, this time in the No. 3 contest, knocking off Gortzounian/Zeiler, 6-4.
The Johnnies were dominant in singles play on Saturday, sweeping UConn, 6-0. All six of St. John's wins over the Huskies were straight-set victories.
The Red Storm won two of its three doubles matches against NJIT on Sunday. St. John's swept its second-straight opponent in singles play last Sunday as St. John's rolled Marist, 6-0. Five of the six contests were won in straight sets.
