The Johnnies and Seminoles will face off at 2 p.m. on the ACC Network
The St. John's women's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Sunday, facing its toughest road assignment of the season as the Johnnies take on No. 8/8 Florida State at Donald L. Tucker Center. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. on the ACC Network.
St. John's enters Sunday's contest on the heels of its best scoring output in over five years, as the Johnnies exploded for 96 points against Army on Monday night at Carnesecca Arena. Freshman guard Leilani Correa led the way for the Red Storm with a 33-point outburst.
Her 33-point performance tied a St. John's freshman record set by Kia Wright against Canisius on Nov. 20, 2004. Before Monday night, the last Johnnie to score 33 or more points in a single game was Aliyyah Handford on Dec. 6, 2015, when the program's all-time leading scorer dropped 33 on Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse.
A two-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, Correa has been a spark off the bench for the Johnnies this season. The Manchester, N.J., native is one of three St. John's players boasting double figures this campaign with 14.0 points per game, the second-highest total among rookies in the BIG EAST. In addition to Correa's high-level scoring ability, she is also pulling down 4.8 rebounds per game.
As a team, the Red Storm has put forth a fantastic effort offensively this season, recording 80 or more points in five of the team's last six games. In the Johnnies' most recent win over the Black Knights, they shot a season-high 58 percent from the floor for the fourth highest shooting clip in program history.
Through nine games this season, the Johnnies sit second in the league in scoring offense and 25th overall in the nation, netting 78.9 points per game. The Red Storm has knocked down 46.4 percent of its tries from the field this year to sit inside the league's top-five and 19th overall in the NCAA.
Sunday's matchup with the Seminoles will mark the fourth all-time meeting between the two teams with FSU leading the series, 3-0. In last year's meeting, the Johnnies fell just shy of completing a comeback over Florida State. With six minutes to play in regulation and the Red Storm trailing by 14 points, St. John's outscored Florida State, 19-9, down the stretch before the clock ran out and the Johnnies fell, 57-53, to the visiting team at Carnesecca Arena.
Former St. John's standout and three-time BIG EAST All-Academic selection Joy McCorvey will be sporting garnet and gold at Sunday's showdown, as she is in her second season as an assistant coach of the Seminoles. McCorvey left her mark on St. John's from 2006-10, as she is one of just four players in program history to have recorded over 700 points and rebounds. McCorvey and the Red Storm's current assistant coach Shenneika Smith played one season at St. John's together in 2009-10.
Florida State enters Sunday's contest boasting a perfect 9-0 record on the season. Through games played on Thursday, FSU is one of just 14 teams that remains undefeated in the NCAA as the Seminoles have not lost a regular season contest since Feb. 28, when they fell to Syracuse, 94-88. As a team, FSU ranks inside the NCAA's top 15 with a +12.8 rebound margin. Through nine games, Florida State has out-rebounded the opposition by double-digits in six of those contests. The Seminoles are also averaging 78.9 points per game, which ranks second in the highly-touted ACC.
Reigning ACC Player of the Week Kiah Gillespie paces the Seminoles lineup with a near double-double, averaging 16.6 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Gillespie has been the leading scorer in FSU's last two matches, posting 24 points against No. 19/21 Michigan State and 17 against Clemson. Senior guard Nausia Woolfolk ranks second in scoring with 14.9 points per game to go along with 6.4 boards through nine outings.
Following Sunday's contest with FSU, St. John's will return home to Carnesecca Arena for its final matchup of non-conference play, as the Johnnies welcome Fairfield to Queens for a 1 p.m. contest on Friday, Dec. 20.
