St. John’s Knocks Off Xavier, 75-67, in BIG EAST Opener

Qadashah Hoppie registered a team-high 18 points
Behind an 18-point performance by Qadashah Hoppie, the team's leading scorer, St. John's secured its ninth-straight victory over Xavier, 75-67, in the Johnnies' BIG EAST opener on Sunday afternoon at the Cintas Center.
In addition to her stellar shooting performance, Hoppie registered four boards, four assists and tied for a career-high four steals on the afternoon.
Freshman guard Leilani Correa finished with 17 points to go along with six rebounds while Alissa Alston knocked down 12 points for the Red Storm.
In her second career appearance for St. John's, Raven Farley grabbed a team-high nine boards against the Musketeers. The 6-foot-4 forward also chipped in four points.
Alisha Kebbe and Tiana England added an efficient eight points apiece in the conference opener. England also dished out a team-best seven assists.
The Johnnies (8-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) opened up league action with a 6-1 streak to take an early lead at the 7:26 mark. The Musketeers (1-11, 0-1 BIG EAST) crept back within two, 6-4, with a shot from deep. Emma Nolan responded with a triple to extend the Red Storm's advantage back to five.
The two teams traded buckets over the next few minutes before the Johnnies' used an 8-2 run to lead by eight, 20-12, after 10 minutes of action.
Kebbe pulled up in the paint for St. John's in the opening seconds of the second quarter, giving the Red Storm its first double-digit lead of the game, 22-12. The Musketeers quickly put the Johnnies' 10-point advantage to bed with five unanswered points to cut their deficit to five, 22-17.
The battle of the blows continued down the stretch of the first half with St. John's holding on to a six-point lead, 35-29, entering the locker room.
After 20 minutes of action, Hoppie paced the way for the visiting team with 10 points on a 4-of-8 shooting from the floor.
Coming out of the intermission, Xavier's A'riana Gray knocked down the first basket, making it a two-possession game, 35-31. St. John's answered by firing off six unanswered points. The Red Storm's run was capped off by an England fast break layup to extend its lead back up to 10, 41-31, two minutes into the third quarter.
Xavier snapped the St. John's offensive push with a second chance jumper, cutting its deficit to eight, 41-33. Alston strung together three points of her own to give the Red Storm its largest lead of the game up to that point, 44-33.
The Musketeers outscored the Johnnies, 9-3, over the next few minutes to sneak back within five, 47-42, midway through the quarter.
The triple threat of Farley, England and Kadaja Bailey rattled off the game's next six points, building St. John's edge up to 11, 55-44.
Xavier continued to chip away at the Red Storm's lead, getting back within seven on three different occasions over the last few minutes of the third quarter, but the Johnnies maintained a 61-52 advantage heading into the final frame.
Correa converted on back-to-back buckets in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, putting the Johnnies ahead by 13, 65-52. The home team did not back down as they continued to battle, using one final push to get as close as five before St. John's locked down the win.
The Red Storm will wrap up 2019 with a trip to Indianapolis on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. showdown with Butler at the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.
