Red Storm will look to win its third straight on BEDN at 4 p.m.
The winners of two in a row and fresh off a victory over Xavier to begin BIG EAST action, the St. John's women's basketball team will venture to Butler for a Tuesday afternoon contest against the Bulldogs.
Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Matt Schumacker and Amber Stocks on the call from the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.
St. John's (8-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) heads to Indianapolis on the heels of a 75-67 victory over the Musketeers on Sunday afternoon in the league's opener. With the defeat over Xavier, the Johnnies have kicked off conference play with a victory five times under the direction of Head Coach Joe Tartamella.
Led by 18 points from four-time BIG EAST Honor Roll selection Qadashah Hoppie, the Red Storm shot 50.0 percent from the floor on Sunday afternoon. Through the first round of BIG EAST matchups, the Johnnies continue to hold down the top spot in the league for field goal percentage with a 45.8 clip on the season.
Hoppie, the team's leading scorer at 16.3 points per game, influenced the Red Storm in a number of other ways as well during the team's triumph over the Musketeers. The sharpshooting junior, who knocked down 10 of her 18 points before halftime, also grabbed four boards, dished out four assists and tied for a career-high four steals.
Hoppie led three St. John's scorers in double figures against Xavier, marking the seventh time this season that the junior guard has led the way for the squad offensively. Leilani Correa, the team's second leading scoring at 15.3 points per game, tallied 17 points and six rebounds. Over her last four outings, the Manchester, N.J., native has logged a combined 90 points, for the most on the team.
Alissa Alston netted an efficient 12 points in Sunday's win. On the season, the redshirt senior from New Haven, Conn., is shooting 47.1 percent from the floor, including a 48.0 percent effort from three-point range to lead the conference.
The Red Storm and the Bulldogs will meet for the 13th time in the history of the two programs, a series that started following the realignment of the BIG EAST. St. John's currently holds an 8-4 advantage over the Bulldogs.
The Johnnies will look to enact a bit of revenge in Tuesday's matchup, after Butler swept the regular-season series from St. John's a season ago. In the most recent contest between the two programs Hoppie scored a career-high 24 points while Tiana England dished out a personal-best 13 assists. Despite the stellar efforts from Hoppie and England, Butler managed to outlast St. John's in overtime at Carnesecca Arena.
The Bulldogs are in search of their first conference win after falling to Seton Hall, 67-62, on Sunday in their BIG EAST home opener. Despite the loss, Kristen Spolyar led the way for Butler with a double-double performance. Spolyar sank five of her 12 field goal attempts, while converting on all six of her tries from the charity stripe, en route to 17 points. Spolyar also pulled down a team-high 11 boards. Two other players finished in double figures for Butler, as Shae Brey recorded 12 while Katherine Strong chipped in 10.
Following its matchup with the Bulldogs, the Red Storm will return home to Carnesecca Arena for a Friday night showdown with Georgetown. The Johnnies' BIG EAST home opener will tip-off at 7 p.m. on BEDN.
