Correa Records 33 Points in St. John’s 96-60 Victory over Army

Correa’s career-high 33-point performance tied a St. John’s freshman record
Behind a career-high 33 point performance from freshman guard Leilani Correa, the St. John's women's basketball team registered its highest scoring output in over five years on Monday evening, picking up a convincing 96-60 win over Army at Carnesecca Arena.
Her 33-point performance tied a St. John's freshman record set by Kia Wright against Canisius on Nov. 20, 2004. Before Monday night, the last Johnnie to score 33 or more in a single game was Aliyyah Handford on Dec. 6, 2015, when the program's all-time leading scorer dropped 33 on Kansas in Allen Fieldhouse.
The freshman guard from Manchester, N.J., also grabbed five boards to go along with three steals in the win for the Red Storm.
Two other players finished in double figures for the St. John's as Kadaja Bailey and Qadashah Hoppie logged 13 points apiece. Bailey also pulled down six rebounds on the evening to go along with a career-high three blocks.
Alisha Kebbe tied Bailey with a team-high six boards on the night, registering the 500th rebound of her St. John's career.
As a team, the Red Storm shot a season high 58 percent from the floor, with 59 points off the bench.
The Johnnies' last 96-point performance came on Jan. 11, 2014, when the Red Storm defeated DePaul, 96-86, at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
St. John's came out of the gates firing, logging 13 points in the first three minutes of action to take a commanding, 13-2, lead. Correa capped off the stretch with back-to-back layups to ignite a 12-point run of her own, giving the Johnnies seven-point advantage, 21-14, with under two minutes to play in the first frame.
In the winding seconds of the first quarter with the Johnnies leading, 23-16, England finished at the rim to beat the buzzer and push the Johnnies ahead by nine, 25-16, after 10 minutes of action.
Correa strung together eight early points to start the second quarter, this included a perfect 4-for-4 effort from the charity stripe to give the Red Storm a 33-18 edge with under eight minutes to play in the half.
The Red Storm continued to control the offensive momentum over the remainder of the period, unleashing a 24-8 streak down the stretch of second quarter. The Johnnies offensive surge concluded with a mid-range jumper from Hoppie to extend the Johnnies' lead to 57-26 heading into intermission.
Correa paced the way for the Johnnies with 25 points at the break. The rookie guard drained nine of her 11 shots from the field, converting on all three of her tries from distance.
St. John's and Army exchanged blows to for the first half of the third quarter before the Johnnies fired off seven unanswered points to take a 43 points lead, 83-40, with under a minute to play in the quarter. The Black Knights hit a three-pointer in the final seconds, with the Johnnies leading 83-43 after 30 minutes of action.
Army continued to battle in the final period, outscoring the Red Storm, 17-13, but could not create a comeback as St. John's remains undefeated at Carnesecca Arena this season.
The Johnnies return to action on Sunday when they travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on No. 8 Florida State in a 2 p.m. contest inside the Donald L. Tucker Center.
