Hoppie Records 24 Points in 73-68 Overtime Loss to Butler

Hoppie and England each finish with a career night for the Red Storm
Qadashah Hoppie scored a career-high 24 points and Tiana England dished out a personal-best 13 assists, but Butler managed to overcome these efforts and outlast St. John's in overtime, 73-68, Friday night at Carnesecca Arena.
With nine seconds remaining in regulation, Hoppie knotted the game at 63 for the Red Storm with a triple. Butler's Whitney Jennings answered back quickly, giving the Bulldogs a two-point lead, 65-63, leaving the Johnnies with a second to make something happen. Then with the shot clock dwindling down, Curteeona Brelove converted in the paint to knot the score at 65, sending Carnesecca Arena into a frenzy and sending the contest into overtime.
However the Johnnies were unable to close out in the extra period, as the Bulldogs held the Red Storm to just three points over the next five minutes to ultimately cement the victory.
Hoppie's career-high 24 points led the way for the Red Storm, as the Staten Island native recorded five of her 10 tries from beyond the arc. The 5-foot-7 guard recorded 16 of those points in the final 20 minutes of action. This was the second time this season that Hoppie has eclipsed the 20-point mark.
England, who entered the game ranked first overall in the BIG EAST for assists, dished out a career-high 13, marking the third time this season that she has finished with 10 or more helpers in a single game.
Alisha Kebbe and Akina Wellere joined Hoppe in double figures, netting 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Despite falling to the Bulldogs the Johnnies put forth a strong defensive performance, coming away with a season-best nine blocks, while grabbing a combined 12 steals to tie for the most this year.
St. John's controlled the offense early, rattling off a 7-2 run in the opening minutes of action to lead the Bulldogs at the 7:35 mark.
After trading blows with Butler over the next few minutes, the Johnnies converted down the stretch. With under three minutes to play in the first quarter, the Red Storm made an 8-2 run to lead, 19-14, after the first 10 minutes of action.
Butler found the bottom of the net early in second quarter but Hoppie responded for St. John's with a shot from downtown to build upon the Johnnies lead, 22-16.
Butler whittled St. John's advantage down to one, 22-21, before Kebbe drained a trey to put the Johnnies back ahead by four. Seconds later, Hoppie launched her second three-pointer of the quarter to make it a seven-point game, 28-21.
With the Johnnies leading by four, 30-26, and three minutes remaining in the half, Butler outscored the Red Storm, 6-2, to knot the contest at 32 at the intermission.
Kebbe stuffed the stat sheet for the Johnnies over the first 20 minutes of action, with 10 points, three rebounds, one block and one steal.
Butler scored first out of the break, but the Johnnies responded, firing off eight unanswered points to give the Red Storm a five-point edge, 40-35, at the 7:38 mark. Butler would tack on three more points before the Johnnies made an 8-2 run to take their largest lead of the night, 49-40.
With under three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Butler unleashed an 8-0 run to pull the game within one, 49-48, with under a minute left on the clock.
With 35 seconds left in the third quarter, Butler was called for a foul, sending Hoppie to the free throw line. The Staten Island native drained both of her attempts to extend the Johnnies lead to 51-48, entering the final 10 minutes of action.
The two teams traded off buckets early in the final quarter, but with five minutes left on the clock, the Bulldogs made a 7-0 run to take over the lead, 61-60.
