LOS ANGELES- The St. John's baseball team dropped the second game of its series with No.3 UCLA, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Johnnies (0-2) struggled offensively against the nation's third ranked squad, mustering just three hits, two of which came in the opening two frames.
Mike Antico, Ryan Hogan and Wyatt Mascarella recorded singles on the afternoon for the Red Storm.
Jeff Belge picked up the loss in his first start of the season, surrendering four runs in three innings of work. The junior southpaw struck out five.
Jack Ralston allowed three hits and struck out seven over six scoreless innings to notch the win for UCLA (2-0). Three relievers combined to no-hit the Red Storm over the final three frames.
St. John's threatened in the top of the second, as Brandon Miller recorded a one-out walk before going first-to-third on a Hogan single. A double play ball ended the Red Storm's hopes for a rally the following at-bat.
UCLA got on the board in the home half, as Michael Toglia led off the frame with a single through the right side before Matt McClain ripped an RBI triple off the wall in center. Next up was Jake Pries, who doubled down the right field line to bring home McClain and extend the UCLA lead to a pair. After a sac bunt moved Pries to third, a Ryan Kreidler triple and a Noah Cardenas single plated two more runs, as the Bruins took a 4-0 lead into the top of the third.
The Bruins threatened again in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with no outs and forcing St. John's to bring Ben Greenberg out of the bullpen. The Fordham transfer played the role of stopper in his Red Storm debut, recording three-straight outs, including a swinging strikeout of Toglia, to exit the frame unscathed and keep the UCLA at four.
UCLA tacked on another run in the sixth, moving ahead 5-0 after Kreidler led off the inning with a double before coming home to score on a Jeremy Ydens single two batters later.
The Bruins added four insurance runs the following frame on just one hit. St. John' surrendered five walks and hit a batter before Ian Murphy entered with two outs and struck out Toglia on three pitches.
