The Johnnies will look to claim their third-straight BIG EAST victory
Fresh off a convincing win at Creighton, the St. John's women's basketball team will wrap up its two-game road swing at Alumni Hall, where the Johnnies will take on Providence on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Â
Sunday's contest has been picked up by FOX Sports Regional Networks for television broadcast, including distribution to YurView and YES Network. Check your local cable and satellite listings for availability. The game will also be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) via FOX Sports Go.Â
Facing the Friars for the second time this season, St. John's (11-12, 4-8) will look to avenge a 67-66 overtime setback on Jan. 11 at Carnesecca Arena. In the team's last meeting, Alisha Kebbe fueled the Red Storm's offense, as the junior guard finished with a team-high 16 points, draining four tries from beyond the arc.
Â
The Johnnies enter Sunday's matchup on the heels of a crucial road victory over Creighton on Friday night. Playing in one of the conferences most lively atmospheres for women's basketball, the Johnnies win evened the season series with the Bluejays, as they moved into a tie in the standings with Creighton.
Â
St. John's defense was key in its recent success over the Bluejays, as the Johnnies forced Creighton to cough up 14 turnovers, converting those miscues into 15 points. The Red Storm also limited the Bluejays to just 33-percent shooting. Curteeona Brelove led the way with 15 points off 6-of-11 shooting. In addition to her scoring touch, the senior forward from Malone, Fla., grabbed a trio of rebounds, two steals and a block for the Red Storm.
Â
Akina Wellere and Tiana England also turned in efficient performances against the Bluejays. Wellere joined Brelove in double figures with 11 points, while England paced the team in assists, dishing out a game-high seven helpers.
Â
Providence (14-10, 6-6) enters Sunday's matchup on the heels of an 82-75 win over Seton Hall on Friday evening in Rhode Island, as Maddie Jolin led four Friars in double-figures with 25 points. On the season, Jovana Nogic and Jolin are leading the team in scoring, averaging 13.8 and 10.5 points per game, respectively.
Â
St. John's has come up short in the last three meetings with the Friars, but prior to this drought the Red Storm had won 14-straight contests in the series. The Johnnies last upended Providence on Feb. 17, 2017 on the road, as former St. John's standout Aaliyah Lewis filled the stat sheet with 17 points, four assists and two steals to lift the Johnnies to a 71-47 blowout victory.
Â
Following their date with Providence, the Johnnies will welcome No. 8/7 Marquette to Carnesecca Arena on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
