Bowie completed her milestone on a solo home run in the fourth
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 23, 2019) - Junior Gretchen Bowie recorded her 100th career RBI on a solo home run in St. John's 5-1 victory over Providence at Red Storm Field on Saturday.
In the team's NFCA StrikeOut Cancer and Go4TheGoal Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer game, the Sparta, N.J., native caught the blistering winds just right as she drove an outside pitch to right-center, putting the game out of reach in the fourth. The Johnnies' third baseman finished the afternoon with a 2-for-3 performance and knocked in another run. Bowie's two RBIs inched closer to the all-time career record (154) set by 2012 graduate Kacee Cox.
Much like her junior counterpart, Marissa Rizzi also tallied two of St. John's nine hits, registering her fourth-straight two-hit game. The reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week bumped her season batting average to .457 after the opening contest.
The Manorville, N.Y., native jumpstarted the St. John's offense with a two-out single to the left side. Clean-up hitter Peyton Cody drove a double to the center field wall, giving the Johnnies a one-run advantage, 1-0.
Following a scoreless second frame, Bowie achieved her milestone mark on a solo shot to right center, extending the Johnnies' lead, 2-0. In the next at-bat, Rizzi drove her second single of the afternoon through the left side before Cody knocked her in on an RBI double to center, taking a 3-0 lead. The freshman out of Mission Viejo, Calif. tacked on another run, 4-0, after she scored on a throwing error by the Friars' third baseman to record her fifth-straight contest with at least one run scored.
Providence (14-11, 0-1 BIG EAST) responded with one score of its own in the fourth frame, slashing its deficit to three, 4-1 before St. John's (12-13, 1-0 BIG EAST) crossed the plate one more time in the fifth. Bowie delivered her team-leading fourth triple of the season, scoring Amelia Ditolvo from first to take a four-run advantage, 5-1.
Madison Morris retired 10-straight Friars to secure the Red Storm's 12th win of the season. The Hampton, Va., native allowed just one run on five hits, fanning 10 in her eighth win. The senior right-hander struck out 10 or more batters for the third time this season.
The Johnnies will look to extend its winning streak to six when the team takes on Providence in Sunday's doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m.
