The Red Storm takes the series, 2-1, after Laura Delgado ends a 10-inning affair on an RBI base knock
The Johnnies took the rubber match, 6-5, after they fell to the Friars, 10-6, in the day's first game. St. John's (13-14, 2-1 BIG EAST) has not lost a conference series to Providence (15-12, 1-2 BIG EAST) since 2011, winning 15 of its 20 matchups.
The BIG EAST opening slate became milestone weekend for the Red Storm. Junior Kaitlin Mattera recorded her 100th career hit in game one on an RBI double down the left field line in the seventh. The starting catcher paced the Johnnies through the first three games of conference action, batting .545 with four runs scored, two RBIs and five extra-base hits.
Senior Christina Melendez joined Gretchen Bowie in the 100-RBI club after she smashed a three-run homer to right field in the team's opening matchup of the day. The Fullerton, Calif., native added another home run in the rubber match to increase her total to three on the season.
Freshman powerhouse Peyton Cody also tallied two dingers in her first BIG EAST competition. The two-time weekly honor roll selection recorded four RBIs and scored five runs in Sunday's doubleheader. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native has been hot in the last 10 games, batting .500 with 16 hits, nine RBIs, and 14 runs scored.
Game One
The visiting Friars defeated the Red Storm, 10-6, after crossing the plate in each of the final four innings.
St. John's Angela Saric battled through trouble in the first three innings, stranding six runners to keep Providence off the scoreboard. The Friars' starter Megan McCune matched the Johnnies' freshman through first three innings, holding the home team to no runs and no hits
Providence snapped the three-inning drought with a five-run fourth. McCune helped her own cause by smacking a three-run double to left field and taking a 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Molly McGarry extended the Friars advantage to four, 4-0, on a solo shot to center before tacking on their fifth run on a fielder's choice.
The Red Storm responded with four of its own in the home half after Melendez's three-run shot cut the deficit to two, 5-3. Following a walk to Kaitlyn Lologo, Delgado lined an RBI double to left, slashing the Friars' lead to one, 5-4. The Hesparia, Calif., native was one of three Johnnies to record two or more hits in game one.
Providence went on to score two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh to extend its advantage to six, 10-4.
In the final frame, Mattera drove an RBI double to left, followed by a Melendez RBI single to cut the Red Storm deficit to four, 10-6.
Game Two
Laura Delgado hit a walk-off single to left field to take down Providence, 6-5, in the 10-inning rubber match in Queens.
St. John's starter Madison Morris picked up the win by tossing the longest outing of her career and throwing over 180 pitches in 10.0 innings of work. She nearly matched her personal best in strikeouts, fanning 14 Friars in the Johnnies' victory. The senior hurler has punched out 107 batters in 104.2 frames in 2019.
The Red Storm didn't waste any time getting on the board in game two as Cody smacked a two-run homer in the first to put the Red Storm up, 2-0.
Melendez joined in on the home run fest as she drove a solo home run in the second to give the Red Storm a three-run lead. After holding Providence scoreless for the third-straight frame, Cody crushed her second home run of the game to center field, extending the Johnnies' lead, 4-0. Following the freshman's dinger, Mattera hit a solo shot of her own to go up, 5-0.
The Friars got on the board in the fourth after Jessica Tomaso led off with a solo homer, cutting the deficit to four, 5-1.
After a pair of scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth, the Friars registered four runs in the seventh to tie the ball game, 5-5. A solo home run, an RBI single and a two-run double forced the Johnnies into their fourth extra-inning game of the season.
St. John's put at least two runners on base in the each of the extra frames before Delgado sent everyone home on an RBI single to left in the 10th.
The Red Storm returns to action when Stony Brook comes to Queens on Wednesday, March 27, with first pitch slated for 2:30 p.m.
