St. John’s leads the all-time series, 7-2
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 26, 2019) – The St. John's softball team takes on America East foe Stony Brook at Red Storm Field on Wednesday, March 27. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
The Johnnies enter the midweek match with a 13-14 record after taking two of three games from Providence in the opening weekend of BIG EAST play.
St. John's and Stony Brook have played nine times since 1981 with the Red Storm leading the all-time series, 7-2. The Johnnies have outscored their Long Island foe, 70-26, and ride a five-game winning streak in the series heading into Wednesday's contest.
After claiming her fifth career BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week award on Monday, senior Madison Morris set a new program record in winning the conference accolade, passing former St. John's standout and current pitching coach Tori Free. The Hampton, Va., native registered 24 strikeouts in 17.0 innings of work against Providence. She fanned at least 10 batters in each of her two wins while allowing three earned runs.
Catcher Kaitlin Mattera was named to the conference's weekly honor after a .545 batting average against Providence. She also recorded her 100th career hit game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
Teammates Gretchen Bowie and Christina Melendez joined the 100-RBI club against the Friars, both on home runs. Bowie hit the century mark with a solo shot in the opening game of the series. In the following game on Sunday, Melendez lined a three-run homer to right field to pick up her milestone.
Stony Brook, which has a scheduled doubleheader today against Sacred Heart, is riding a nine-game winning streak into its weekday road trip. The visiting Seawolves pace the America East Conference with a 10-7 record and a .296 batting average. Stony Brook has not lost since BIG EAST foe Georgetown defeated them, 4-3, on March 15.
Leading the pack is Melissa Rahrich, who leads in almost every statistical for the Seawolves including, batting average (.390), hits (23), RBIs (18) runs scored (17), and home runs (5). She also pitches for the Stony Brook, posting a 4-5 record with a 3.25 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 56.0 innings of work.
In last year's matchup, former head coach Amy Kvilhaug picked up her 400th win against the Seawolves, 4-1. Despite Morris' ability to hold Stony Brook to one run on the afternoon, Rahrich threatened in each at-bat, recording three hits in four plate appearances.
The Seawolves' Taylor Pinchin picked up the loss in the last year's matchup, but scored Stony Brook's lone run of the game on a solo shot. The junior has posted a 3-1 record with 14 strikeouts and two complete games in 2019.
Wednesday's contest will be streamed on ESPN3 and can be followed on the WatchESPN app. Live stats will also be available.
