St. John’s placed in four of six events on Saturday
STANFORD, Calif. (March 30, 2019) – After a thrilling first day at the Stanford Invitational, the St. John's track & field team returned to Cobb Track and Angell Field for the final day of competition. The Johnnies placed in four of the six events they competed in on Saturday.
"Very proud to have our team come out west and does so well. Coach [Aliann] Pompey's sprinters are running great coast-to-coast and our field event athletes always find a way to score," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "We are looking forward to continued success next week back on the East Coast at Princeton."
Following her second collegian rank in Friday's 400-meter dash, sophomore Leah Anderson continued to prove she can compete among the world's top sprinters by finishing in sixth place and as the fourth collegian in the 200-meter dash. The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native staved off Panama's Gianna Woodruff for the second-straight day, posting a 24.04-second time, 0.1 seconds faster than the 2017 South American Champion. Also among her competition on day two were 2016 Olympic gold medalists Dalilah Muhammad and Brianna Rollins-McNeal. The second-year Johnnie finished only 0.69 seconds behind the 400-meter hurdles champion (Muhammad) and 0.59 seconds behind the 100-meter hurdles medalist (Rollins-McNeal).
Anderson also competed in both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter squads, who also raced against some of the top competitors in the country including the University of California and the University of Minnesota. Ja'Tae Joyner, Destiny Davis, Skyy Diop and Anderson won their 4x100-meter relay heat and earned a third-best time of 46.69 seconds, finishing 0.04 seconds faster than Fresno Pacific.
The 4x400-meter group of Chenoa Sebastian, Kafi Ottley, Anderson and Diop secured a spot in the finals and earned a seventh-place finish with a time of 3:43.16.
Freshman Joyner also reached the finals in her first outdoor triple jump. Her mark of 11.95 meters tied Boise State's Taj Dorsett with the eighth-longest distance in the competition. This comes one day after placing third in the long jump.
The Red Storm travels to New Jersey for the Sam Howell Invitational hosted by Ivy League foe Princeton on Saturday, April 6.
