St. John’s Golfers Kick off Spring Schedule in Daytona Beach

The men’s and women’s golf programs will begin spring slate at Gary Freeman Spring Invitational
The St. John's men's and women's golf teams will kick off their spring seasons this week, traveling to the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the Gary Freeman Spring Invitational on March 7-8.
Both programs finished strong during the fall campaign, as the women's team recorded four top-10 finishes while the men's squad placed inside the top-10 in five of the team's seven fall events.
On the men's side, Austin Briggs will enter the tournament as the Johnnies' number one golfer, while freshmen Tyler Gerbavsits and senior Ross Moore are slotted in the second and third positions. Matthew Sweeney and Gerald Mackedon will round out the five-man lineup for St. John's. Jack Simon, Andrew Baek and Jonathan Spicci will all three be playing as individuals.
For the women, Kaitleen Shee will represent the Johnnies in the number one spot, followed by Linda Wang, Andrea Sanchez, Lydia Kim, and Alejandra Sanchez. Sofie Huseby and newcomer Jessie Kweon will participate in the individual portion of the tournament.
The women's 15-team field will consist of St. John's, Bethune-Cookman, Barry University, Seminole State, North Carolina A&T, Sacred Heart, Stetson, Hartford, Palm Beach Atlantic, Savannah State, Holy Cross, LIU Brooklyn, Fort Wayne, William Woods and Central Michigan.
The men's 16-team field will include host school Bethune-Cookman along with St. John's, Robert Morris, Alabama A&M, Sacred Heart, William Woods, Augusta University, Florida A&M, Holy Cross, Fort Wayne, LIU Brooklyn, Eastern Ill., St. Francis Brooklyn, Savannah State, North Carolina A&T and Maryland Eastern Shore.
The LPGA International boasts two world-class four-star courses as rated by Golf Digest. The men's team will tee off on the par-72, 6,984-yard Arthur Hills Course. The women will be playing on the par-72, 6,300-yard Rees Jones Course.
Tee times for both the men's and women's teams are set for 8:30 a.m. All results will be posted to RedStormSports.com at the conclusion of each day.
