The Red Storm sweeps the Avengers for its eighth-consecutive win, improve to 14-5 this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The red-hot St. John's men's tennis team continued its dominance Wednesday morning, blanking the ASA Brooklyn Avengers, 4-0, at the St. John's Tennis Courts for its eighth-straight win.
The Avengers opened the match by winning the No. 1 doubles bout as Jared Howard and James Howard defeated Andrei Crapcenco and Alex Roszkowski, 7-6. The Johnnies bounced back and was secured victories the No. 2 and the No. 3 matches to clinch the doubles point.
Igor Maslov and Charlie James defeated Yassir Aknin and Paulo Chiapponi in a close contest, winning 7-6 on the No. 2 court. Alan Nunez Aguilera and Daniel Skripnik made quick work of Vladyslav Kulakov and Alisher Nosirov with a 6-0 sweep to seal the early point.
In singles play, the trio of Aditya Vashistha, Luka Sucevic, and Maslov came up clutch for the Red Storm as they won the first three bouts to solidify the sweep.
Vashistha defeated ASA Brooklyn's Aknin, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 2 match. In the No. 3 contest, Sucevic defeated Kulakov, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Maslov claimed his second singles victory of the season on the No. 4 court, besting James Howard, 6-3, 6-4.
The No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 matches, which respectively featured Nunez Aguilera, James, and Roszkowski, all went unfinished.
St. John's returns to the court on Wednesday, April 10, as the Johnnies travel to Hempstead, N.Y., to take on Hofstra at 3 P.M.
