Red Storm recorded its third shutout of the season and fourth straight victory
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 10, 2019) – The St. John's softball team extended its winning streak to four after shutting out Manhattan, 6-0, at Red Storm Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Red Storm pitchers Kayla Kmett, Angela Saric, and Madison Morris all appeared in the contest, holding the Jaspers' lineup to four hits. None of the Johnnies' hurlers pitched more than 45 pitches.
Rookie Peyton Cody extended her hitting streak to 15 in the fifth inning after she lined a single up the middle. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native boosted her season average to .415 after going 1-for-2 with a walk against Manhattan (12-20, 1-5 MAAC). She eventually scored the Johnnies' sixth run on Laura Delgado's double to left field.
The Red Storm swiped six bases on the afternoon, including two by both Marissa Rizzi and Meisha Murray.
Freshman Anna Freveletti registered her first and second-career RBIs on a single to the left side, driving in Kalei Sorensen and Delgado to give the Red Storm a 5-0 lead after the first inning.
In the home half of the opening frame, St. John's (19-16, 7-1 BIG EAST) worked six walks in the inning and scored two of the team's five runs on wild pitches. Murray crossed the plate on one after drawing a walk, swiping second and moving to third on a wild pitch to take a one-run advantage. Rizzi scored on the other after she drove in Gretchen Bowie on a single to the left side to push the Red Storm lead to three.
Following the five-run first inning, the teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Delgado hit an RBI double.
St. John's will hit the road for the second-straight weekend, heading to Seton Hall for a three-game set beginning on April 13.
