Red Storm has won six straight games and seven consecutive BIG EAST contests
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (April 13, 2019) – The St. John's softball team continued to dominate in BIG EAST play, winning its seventh-straight conference matchup with a doubleheader sweep of Seton Hall at the Essex County Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field on Saturday.
The Red Storm also extended its winning streak to six, taking game one, 4-3, in eight innings, before capturing game two, 2-0. Angela Saric and Madison Morris combined for 13 strikeouts and six hits in 15 innings of work. The Red Storm's duo also tossed a combined no-hitter through 6.1 innings in the second contest.
Freshman Peyton Cody collected at least one hit in both matchups this afternoon to increase her team-high hitting streak to 17.
Game 1
Sophomore Kalei Sorensen played hero in extra innings, delivering an RBI double down the right-field line to lift the Red Storm, 4-3, over the Pirates.
The Valencia, Calif., native recorded her first career RBI in her only at-bat after entering as a defensive replacement late in the game.
Junior Kaitlin Mattera and Laura Delgado provided steady offense for St. John's, each recording two hits and an RBI in game one.
After a pair of scoreless innings to open the game, the Red Storm threatened with two outs as Meisha Murray broke up Pirates' starter Madison Strunk's perfect games and swiped her 14th stolen base of the season. Gretchen Bowie worked a walk in the next at-bat before Seton Hall stranded the Johnnies on first and second.
Following another scoreless inning pitched by Morris, the Johnnies scored the first two runs of the afternoon in the top of the fourth. Delgado drove in Mattera on single to left, giving the Johnnies a 1-0 lead. In the next at-bat, Natalie Giroux knocked Peyton Cody in on a ground out to extend the lead to two.
The Pirates responded with two runs in the home half of the fourth to tie the game. Following a sacrifice fly by Destini Peck, Baylee Allender hit a double down the left field line to knot the game at two.
Seton Hall did not hold the tie for long, giving up a two-out, RBI single to Mattera, allowing Bowie to score from third to re-take the lead, 3-2.
The BIG EAST rivals were held scoreless in the next two half innings before Katherine Matthys singled to right-center to deadlock the game at three after six frames. One and a half innings later, Sorensen placed a double behind first base to take a decisive lead, 4-3
Game 2
The pitching duo of Saric and Morris jammed the Seton Hall hitters in the second contest, holding the home team to just one hit in the Johnnies' 2-0 victory.
Game two started the same way game one did, three scoreless frames and a few base runners before the Johnnies recorded a two-spot in the fourth on an RBI single and a fielder's choice.
Delgado drove in her second run of the afternoon with a base knock to left in the visitor half of the fourth. Four batters later, the Red Storm's second run crossed after the team loaded the bases and Amelia Ditolvo drove in Lologo from third.
Saric picked up her eighth win of the season, allowing no hits and fanning two in five innings of work. Morris closed the game out by striking out four of the final seven batters to pick up her second save in 2019.
The Red Storm will look to sweep a conference opponent for the third-straight weekend when the team finishes its series with Seton Hall on Sunday. First pitch of the final game is slated for noon.
