St. John’s Crosses State Lines to Take on Seton Hall

Red Storm has not lost a three-game series to the Pirates since 2010
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 12, 2019) – After extending its winning streak to four on Wednesday, the St. John's softball team heads to Seton Hall for a three-game tilt at the Essex County Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field beginning on Saturday at noon.
All three contests will be broadcast on the Pirate Sports Network via SHUPirates.com and will feature live stats.
The Johnnies are three games over .500 after shutting out Manhattan, 6-0, in their midweek matchup. Following a five-run first inning against the Jaspers, the Red Storm never looked back to pick up its fourth consecutive victory.
Rookie sensation Peyton Cody extended her hitting streak to 15 in the sixth inning on Wednesday after lining a single up the middle. Since the start of her hitting streak on March 15, the Mission Viejo, Calif., native has dominated at the dish, batting .490 while scoring 19 times and driving in 25 runs.
Marissa Rizzi and Christina Melendez have also produced for the Johnnies' lineup over the same 15-game span, batting a combined .488 with 37 RBIs, 30 runs scored and 12 of team's 27 home runs.
St. John's enters the weekend matchup boasting a 57-26 all-time record against Seton Hall. The Red Storm has not lost on the road since 2009, winning nine consecutive games in South Orange. Additionally, the Johnnies have not lost a series to the Pirates since 2010.
In the last 15 meetings, the Red Storm holds a 13-2 record and has outscored the Seton Hall, 99-40.
In the 2018 series, St. John's Kaitlin Mattera recorded five hits, two runs and an RBI against the BIG EAST rival. Bowie also jumped in on offense in game one, going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a two-run homer.
Seton Hall enters the weekend series with a 17-16 record, winning five of its last six games, including a victory over Hofstra, 4-1, on Thursday.
The Pirates' offense has produced 58 doubles and 10 triples on the season, ranking them 13th in the nation in doubles per game (1.78) and 24th in triples per game (0.30).
Junior Hailey Arteaga leads the charge offensively for Seton Hall, with a slash line of .412/.667/.449. She has recorded 42 hits, 27 RBIs and 19 runs scored through 33 starts this season. The Pirates' outfielder also ranks first in the BIG EAST in doubles (12), fourth in batting average (.404), slugging percentage (.667). Last season, Arteaga hit two home runs in the Pirates' lone victory, 9-8, against the Red Storm.
Fellow junior Reganne Camp paces the Seton Hall pitching staff with eight victories and 92 strikeouts in 86.1 innings of work.
The battle of Madisons is expected to take place once again as the Pirates' Madison Strunk and the Red Storm's Madison Morris dueled in 2018 before Seton Hall edged St. John's in game one.
