Red Storm has won nine consecutive BIG EAST contests
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (April 14, 2019) – Nine straight BIG EAST wins for the St. John's softball team after its victory over Seton Hall, 3-0, to complete the sweep at the Essex County Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field on Sunday afternoon. The Johnnies also extended their longest winning streak of the season to seven with the win.
The Red Storm posted back-to-back shutouts against the Pirates for the first time since April 1993. St. John's (22-16, 10-1 BIG EAST) has not allowed a run since the sixth frame of game one, totaling 16 straight innings.
Six of the Johnnies' nine runs this weekend came in the fourth frame, tallying exactly two runs in all three games. Shortstop Amelia Ditolvo rocked a two-run homer, her fifth of the season, to end the Red Storm's two-game home run drought and give the Red Storm its 3-0 lead after four.
St. John's scored the first run in all three games against Seton Hall (17-19, 4-6 BIG EAST) Freshman Peyton Cody drove in her team-leading 38th RBI on an infield single to short in the first inning, scoring Gretchen Bowie from third. With her lone base knock, the Johnnies' rookie extended her hitting streak to 18.
Senior ace Madison Morris allowed only five hits and struck out two in her 14th win of the season. In three appearances, the Hampton, Va., native recorded two wins and a save for the second consecutive weekend. The right-hander finished the series with a 0.91 ERA, 10 strikeouts and held the Pirates to a .196 batting average.
Laura Delgado tallied a team-high five hits over the weekend slate, including a two-hit performance this afternoon. The Hesperia, Calif., native also scored her lone run of the afternoon on Ditolvo's dinger.
Fellow junior Bowie also recorded two hits in today's contest, registering her seventh multi-hit game of the season.
Marissa Rizzi reached base safely for the 12th-straight contest, knocking a single to center in the third inning.
