The Red Storm sweeps the Wildcats for its tenth-consecutive win, finish regular season at 16-5
VILLANOVA, Pa. – The St. John's men's tennis team continued its dominant play against Villanova Saturday morning, blanking its third-straight opponent, 4-0. The Red Storm's win over the Wildcats marked its tenth-consecutive victory to conclude the regular season.
Villanova opened the match by winning the No. 1 doubles bout as Tyler Roth and Thomas Dodson defeated Andrei Crapcenco and Igor Maslov, 6-2. The Johnnies (16-5) bounced back and secured victories in the No. 2 and the No. 3 matches to clinch the doubles point.
Ognjen Trejgut and Alan Nunez Aguilera outdueled Stefan Suarez and Tommy Mulfur, 6-4, on the No. 2 court. Dusan Vukicevic and Alex Roszkowski made quick work of Dylan Flanagan and Charlie Schuls, claiming a 6-2 victory to seal the early point.
In singles play, the trio of Crapcenco, Udayan Bhakar, and Trejgut came up clutch for the Red Storm as they won the first three contests to solidify the sweep.
Crapcenco defeated Villanova's Suarez, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 1 match. In the No. 5 contest, Bhakar dominated Schuls, 6-2, 6-2. Trejgut clinched the final point of the contest and secured the sweep on the No. 6 court, besting Mulfur, 6-3, 6-4.
The No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 matches, which respectively featured Nunez Aguilera, Aditya Vashistha, and Vukicevic, all went unfinished.
St. John's returns to the court for the beginning of postseason play, starting on Thursday, April 18, as the Red Storm travel to Cayce, S.C., to compete in the BIG EAST Championships.
