No. 1 St. John’s Defeats No. 8 Xavier in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals, 4-1

The Red Storm advances to the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Championships for the sixth-consecutive season
CAYCE, S.C. – The St. John's men's tennis team bounced back in singles play, outdueling No. 8 Xavier, 4-1, in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
In doubles action, the Red Storm (17-5) and the Musketeers traded wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 contests. After Andrei Crapcenco and Udayan Bhakar dropped their match, 6-4, in the No. 1 bout, Alan Nunez Aguilera and Ognjen Trejgut forced a decisive third match for the doubles point, winning on the No. 2 court, 6-4.
The duo of Dusan Vukicevic and Alex Roszkowski battled valiantly in their match but came up just short of gaining the doubles point for the Johnnies, falling 7-6.
In singles play, the Red Storm earned its first point of the match with a quick 6-0, 6-0 triumph in the No. 6 match by Trejgut over Xavier's Trent Smith.
Vukicevic dominated in the No. 4 singles bout as he outlasted Mike Lee, 6-0, 6-3, giving the Johnnies a 2-1 lead.
Nunez Aguilera's victory in the No. 2 position over Jack Dykema, 6-2, 6-3, increased the Red Storm's lead to 3-1.
Crapcenco clinched the match for the Johnnies, defeating Brett Winters in straight sets on the No. 1 court, 6-3, 6-4.
St. John's was leading in both the No. 3 and No. 5 contests as Aditya Vashistha and Bhakar were both nearing victories when the match was called.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish's squad returns to action on Saturday, April 20, to face the winner of No. 4 DePaul and No. 5 Creighton in the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Championships at 9 a.m.
