St. John’s rides a seven-game winning streak and has won nine consecutive BIG EAST contests
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 17, 2019) – Coming off of seven straight victories and nine consecutive BIG EAST wins, the St. John's softball team welcomes DePaul to Queens for a series between the conference's top two teams beginning on April 18. Thursday's doubleheader is slated for noon, followed by a single game on Saturday with first pitch scheduled at 11 a.m.
All three games will be broadcast on ESPN3 with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
Senior Madison Morris and freshman Angela Saric dominated Seton Hall last weekend, holding its lineup to a combined three runs and 11 hits over three games to earn BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and Weekly Honor Roll, respectively. The rookie pitcher picked up her first career conference accolade in the league's announcement on Monday after allowing just one run on one hit in 6.1 innings of work.
Morris has won the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week award three times this season, the most by a Johnnies' pitcher in program history. Only five Johnnies had won the award more than once in a single campaign, Francesca Carullo (2015), Morris (2016), Grace Kramer (2016), McKenzie Murray (2016) and Tori Free (2017).
The Johnnies can tie the program record for longest winning streak in conference matchups (12) set by the 2015 BIG EAST Championship squad with a sweep of DePaul this weekend. The 2019 team's stretch began with a victory in the final game against Providence on March 24, followed by two wins against Georgetown and a trio of victories over both Creighton and Seton Hall.
Laura Delgado paces the Red Storm lineup over the nine-game stretch with 15 hits and a .455 batting average. Freshman Peyton Cody trails her teammate by one hit (14) while knocking in 16 runs and crossing the plate 10 times. As a team, the Johnnies are batting .312 and averaging 8.77 runs per game.
DePaul enters the series with a 29-9 record and sits in second in the BIG EAST standings at 8-1. Much like the Red Storm, the Blue Demons have won seven straight contests with their last loss coming against Butler on March 24.
Junior Jessica Cothern leads DePaul offensively with a slash line of .357/.628/.411. She has recorded 46 hits, 41 RBIs and 21 runs scored through 38 starts this season. Cothern also ranks first in the BIG EAST in doubles (14) and RBIs (40) while placing second in base knocks (46).
Four more Blue Demons are also batting over .300 including, Morgan Greenwood (.360), Gabby O'Reilly (.343), Maranda Gutierrez (.328) and Kate Polucha (.322). Sophomore Polucha had the Red Storm's number in last year's series, knocking off the Red Storm in the rubber match with a walk-off home run, 2-1.
As a team, DePaul is ranked second in the BIG EAST, trailing only St. John's in several categories including, batting average (.289), slugging percentage (.464), runs scored (200), hits (290), RBIs (187), home runs (35), walks (127).
The Blue Demons' Natalie Halvorson and Krista Dalgarn have dominated the circle, posting a combined 2.77 ERA and 159 strikeouts in 260.1 innings of work. Halvorson has tallied 17 of the teams 29 wins to lead the BIG EAST and is expected to face St. John's ace Madison Morris in two games.
DePaul is the only BIG EAST team ranked in the top 100 of the NCAA RPI (77) while the Red Storm will look to crack the list (105).
