Red Storm downed the Blue Demons, 4-1, in game one before falling, 5-4, in game two
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 18, 2019) – The St. John's softball team split its Thursday afternoon doubleheader with DePaul at Red Storm Field in a battle between the BIG EAST's top two teams. The Johnnies' downed the Blue Demons, 4-1, in the opening contest before the visiting team narrowly escaped with a 5-4 victory in game two.
Game 1
On the day that she was named to the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I Freshman of the Year Top 25 List, rookie Peyton Cody delivered a 3-for-3 performance in game one. The Mission Viejo, Calif., native scored twice against the Blue Demons and knocked in her team-leading 39th RBI of the season.
Reigning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week Madison Morris picked up her 15th win of the season, moving to 8-0 in conference play. The senior hurler allowed one run on four hits and fanned five in her 28th appearance of 2019.
After a scoreless first inning, DePaul (30-10, 9-2 BIG EAST) took an early 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Gabby O'Riley.
St. John's (23-17, 10-2 BIG EAST) responded to the Blue Demons' tally with a two-spot in the home half. After Cody extended her hitting streak to 19 on a single up the middle, she scored the Johnnies' first run on a sacrifice fly by Amelia Ditolvo to tie the game at one. In the following at-bat, Kaitlyn Lologo drove another base knock to center field, scoring Christina Melendez and giving the Red Storm a 2-1 lead.
Following a scoreless third inning, the Red Storm scored a run in each of the final three frames before defeating DePaul.
In the fourth inning, Cody hit her 10th double of the season to lead off the home half. Three batters later, Ditolvo increased the lead to 3-1 on a single to center, knocking Cody in for the second time in the game.
Following another shutout frame from Morris, junior Gretchen Bowie reached on an infield single to start the fifth inning. After the Sparta, N.J., native stole second and advanced to third, Cody lined a base knock up the middle to drive in Bowie and take a 4-1 advantage.
The Johnnies continued to reach base in the sixth inning, loading the bases on two walks by Ditolvo and Bowie while Lologo reached on an error. Rizzi worked a bases-loaded walk, forcing Ditolvo to score St. John's final run.
The Red Storm extended its winning streak to eight and won its 10th consecutive BIG EAST contest with the team's 5-1 victory.
Game Two
St. John's dropped a heart-breaking game two, 5-4, despite Lologo's first career multi-homer game.
For the second straight contest, the Blue Demons jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage on a double by Morgan Greenwood in the top of the first frame.
Following six scoreless half innings, the Johnnies' tied the game in the fourth. Rizzi walked to lead off the frame and Mattera reached base on a DePaul miscue to set up first and second with no outs. Two batters later, Christina Melendez knocked in Rizzi on a single to knot the contest at one.
The deadlock did not last long as the Blue Demons posted three runs in the fifth frame. A pair of errors by the St. John's defense caused a trio of runs to cross the plate and DePaul to take a 4-1 lead.
Lologo slashed the Johnnies' deficit to one, 4-3, in the fifth inning, smacking a two-run shot to left-center after Ditolvo was hit by a pitch.
DePaul increased its margin to 5-3 after Greenwood posted the visiting team's final run in the top of the seventh on a solo shot to left field.
St. John's did not go down without a fight. Lologo slashed the lead to one for the second time in the game at 5-4, sending a solo homer off of the scoreboard in left field. The Johnnies' rookie finished the afternoon with a combined 3-for-5 performance with three RBIs and two runs scored. The Red Storm smacked two more pitches to the warning track in the final inning before the Blue Demon's Natalie Halvorson closed the door.
The Johnnies return to Red Storm Field for the rubber match against DePaul beginning at 11 a.m., on Saturday.
