Red Storm Falls to Iona, 7-2, on Wednesday

St. John’s returns to action this weekend against Villanova
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 24, 2019) – The St. John's softball team dropped its midweek matchup to Iona, 7-2, at Donald E. Walsh Field on Wednesday afternoon.
St. John's (23-18, 11-2 BIG EAST) and Iona (15-20, 9-3 MAAC) combined for seven errors and allowed four unearned runs in the afternoon contest.
Junior Gretchen Bowie scored the first run of the game for the Red Storm in the opening frame after she walked, stole second, and advanced to third on an error all before crossing on a wild pitch.
Following a scoreless inning and a half, Peyton Cody drove in her team-leading 40th RBI in the third inning on a hard single down the right field line, scoring Meisha Murray from second base to increase the Red Storm lead to two, 2-0.
Iona responded in the home half with five runs to take a three-run lead. Following a pair of RBI base hits to tie the game at two, the Gaels' Hailey Thompson hit a triple with the bases-loaded to take a 5-2 advantage.
After blanks in three-straight half frames, Iona added two runs on two bases-loaded walks in the fifth, increasing its lead to five, 7-2, before shutting the door in the final two frames.
Marissa Rizzi and Christina Melendez recorded base knocks against the MAAC rival, increasing the hit total to five.
The Red Storm returns to Queens for its final home series of the season against Villanova, beginning on April 27.
