No. 4 St. John’s Falls to No. 1 Xavier in the BIG EAST Semifinals, 4-3

The Red Storm finishes the 2018-19 campaign with a 13-7 record
CAYCE, S.C. – The St. John's women's tennis team fell to No. 1 Xavier in the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships on Sunday, 4-3, at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
In doubles action, the Red Storm (13-7) and the Musketeers traded wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 contests. After Jessica Livianu and Najah Dawson won their contest, 6-1, in the No. 1 bout, Delia Arranz and Gabriela Tenorio dropped their match on the No. 3 court, 6-2, forcing a decisive third match for the doubles point.
The duo of Olaya Inclan Solis and Oceane Garibal secured the crucial doubles point in the No. 2 match for the Johnnies for the second-straight day, 6-4.
In singles play, the Red Storm lost its first two matches on the No. 2 and No. 6 courts. Kaitlin Ruether beat Tenorio, 6-0, 6-2, to earn the Musketeers their first point of the match. Xavier obtained its first lead of the match when Inclan Solis fell to Sophia Abelson in the No. 2 contest, 6-4, 6-3.
Livianu stopped the bleeding temporarily, tying the match at two points apiece when she beat Ahmeir Kyle, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
Arranz's win on the No. 5 court over Hunter Roper, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, inched the Johnnies within one match of securing a spot in Monday's BIG EAST title match.
After Dawson dropped her No. 4 bout to Rachael Reichenbach in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, it would come down to Garibal in the No. 3 match with the contest all squared at three points apiece.
After losing the first set to Emily Thomas, 6-4, the junior responded by taking the second set, 5-7, forcing a decisive third set. The three and a half hour match came to an end when Thomas wrapped up the match by claiming the final set, 7-5.
St. John's ends the season with a 13-7 record and will await All-BIG EAST Conference awards this upcoming week.
