England named to All-Met First Team, Hoppie finds spot on All-Met Third Team
The dynamic duo of Tiana England and Qadashah Hoppie were recognized by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) on Friday, as England was named to the All-Met First Team and Hoppie tabbed a spot on All-Met Third Team.
England elevated her game exponentially as a sophomore, leading the BIG EAST in assists at 5.7 helpers per game en route to her first-ever First Team All-Met selection. With 5.7 dimes per game, England was the only BIG EAST player to rank inside the top-20 in the NCAA at the conclusion of the campaign.
In addition to her facilitating ability, the Stamford, Conn., native averaged 12.0 points per game during BIG EAST play to pace the Johnnies. The 5-foot-7 point guard notched double figures a total 17 times on the season, reaching the 20-point mark twice on the year.
Hoppie garners the second All-Met honor of her career after leading the Red Storm in scoring all season at 11.6 points per game to rank inside the top-25 in the league. The Staten Island native recorded double figures for the Johnnies on 18 different occasions, eclipsing the 20-point mark twice, including a career-high 24-point performance against Butler.
The 5-foot-7 guard also etched her name into the record book this year when the Johnnies defeated Ole Miss at the Paradise Jam. Hoppie shot a perfect 17-for-17 from the charity stripe against the Rebels, snapping a 16-year old program record. Hoppie's 17 made free throws placed her inside the top five on the national level for the most free throws made in a single contest during the season.
The Red Storm made headlines this year, with England and Hoppie each lighting up the scoreboard for the Red Storm against then-no. 8/7 Marquette. Their performances helped lift St. John's to its most notable victory in terms of national rankings in nearly a decade.
The 86th NIT/MBWA Haggerty Awards dinner will take place on Tuesday evening at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown, N.Y.
