The Red Storm is 14-8 all-time against the Rams
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 30, 2019) – The St. John's softball team will hit the road for its final midweek matchup of the season, taking on Fordham at Bahoshy Field on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Wednesday's contest will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats can be found at FordhamSports.com.
St. John's clinched its sixth-straight postseason appearance with a pair of wins over Villanova and can secure the No.1 seed this weekend at Butler.
Gretchen Bowie picked up her first BIG EAST Player of the Week after a breakout performance against the Wildcats. The Sparta, N.J., native recorded a team-high nine RBIs and five runs scored over the three-game stretch, including a pair of three-run homers. Bowie also snapped her nine-game RBI drought on Friday with one of her round-trippers to take the lead in the opening contest.
Fellow junior Marissa Rizzi also joined Bowie among the league's top weekly performers, notching her second honor roll selection of the season. The Johnnies' first baseman belted her 12th home run in the rubber match against Villanova, ending her 10-game streak without a dinger. Her spotlight performance came in game three on Sunday, recording a career-high four hits and five RBIs while falling a triple shy of the cycle.
Rizzi is batting .411 through 43 starts and has not seen her average dip below .385 at any point this season.
Senior ace Madison Morris moved to 17-5 after a pair of victories against Villanova this past weekend. In game three, the senior hurler picked up her 400th career strikeout while also sliding into sixth all-time for most punchouts in a season (164). The Johnnies' ace can crack the top-five with 19 strikeouts over the final four games.
Peyton Cody has tallied 43 RBIs in her rookie campaign, only four away from breaking Bowie's single-season freshman record (46) and six behind the all-time leader Erin Burner (49).
Fordham assistant coach Matt Klampert is no stranger to St. John's, serving as team manager and volunteer assistant coach in 2015. During that season he helped St. John's to its first BIG EAST Championship alongside Head Coach Bob Guerriero and assistant coach Tori Free.
The Rams hold a 24-22 overall record while going 15-5 against Atlantic 10 opponents. Prior to Fordham's current two-game skid, the Rams had won 14-straight contests. As a team, Fordham ranks first in the Atlantic-10 in home runs (47) and second in hits (394), runs (242) and RBIs (222).
Five of the Rams' nine starters are batting over .300 with more than 40 hits. One of those five is Jordy Storm, who is hitting a team-high .368 with a second-best 31 runs scored, 10 homers and 30 RBIs. Molly Roark paces the Fordham lineup with 14 of her 42 hits going over the fence, ranking her 41st in the country in home runs.
In last season's matchup, St. John's and Fordham put on a slugfest at Red Storm Field, smashing a combined ten home runs in the Johnnies' 14-11 victory. St. John's Bowie and Melendez both belted two of the Red Storm's six dingers.
