The Red Storm will recognize its senior class at the sixth annual meet
QUEENS, N.Y. – Coming off of a successful weekend at the historic Penn Relays, the St. John's track and field team returns home for the sixth annual Tom Farrell Classic in Queens.
The Johnnies' two-day meet honors former alumnus and longtime St. John's volunteer assistant coach Tom Farrell, who won the bronze medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games.
"We are looking forward to hosting the sixth annual Tom Farrell Classic this Friday and Saturday as it gives our team the opportunity to compete on their home track in front of family and friends," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "The meet has become an important fixture on the outdoor schedule with over 20 teams competing. We encourage everyone to come out and see some great track & field this weekend."
The Red Storm will recognize its nine seniors, welcome back alumni, and present the James Soehner Award for the most outstanding alumni of the St. John's track and field team.
On Friday, men's and women's throwers will kick off at Queens College, competing in the discus and hammer throws, beginning at 9 a.m.
Competition will move to DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday for day two, highlighted by the sixth annual Tom Farrell Classic track and field races. The meet will begin at 11:00 a.m. with local youth CYO teams participating in relay races, followed by the women's javelin at 11:30 a.m. Majority of the races will start at 12:30 p.m., beginning with the women's 4x100 meter relay.
The Johnnies will honor the nine members of their senior class at 12:15 p.m. with an honorary presentation from the coaching staff and their families. St. John's will also extend a special welcome to the alumni who are present at the meet.
Alumni and special guests are welcome to join Farrell, the coaching staff, and the program for a reception and buffet free of charge to close out Saturday's festivities.
Concluding an action-packed weekend, St. John's is welcoming all attendants to Sunday Mass at St. Thomas More Church on campus. The Service is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and will be open to all.
