St. John’s Dominates at the Tom Farrell Classic

The Red Storm earned six first-place finishes at its lone home meet of the outdoor season
QUEENS, N.Y. (May 4, 2019) – Coming off of a two-event sweep on Friday, the St. John's track and field team continued to dominate at the Tom Farrell Classic on Saturday.
In the meet that honors 1968 Olympic Bronze Medalist and volunteer coach Farrell, the Red Storm captured six first-place finishes, four of which came from assistant coach John McCree's throwers.
The Red Storm throwers swept the top-three spot in three of four throwing events. After a pair of wins from Jennifer Odoemene and Samantha Morillo on Friday, Amarys Berry and Esmeralda Reyes picked up victories in the shot put and javelin, respectively. Berry launched the shot put a meet-record 14.28 meters to secure first place. Morillo finished in second with a distance of 12.69 meters, followed by Najeaya Singleton in third at 12.64 meters.
Reyes defeated 34 opponents in the javelin with a 40.10-meter throw, beating the next best distance by over four meters. Nina D'Amato scored a fourth-place finish with a 32.20-meter mark on Saturday.
Sophomore Leah Anderson set a new meet record in the 200 meter dash, knocking off the previous record set by Maya Stephens in 2016. The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native crossed the finish line at 23.99 seconds, 0.13 faster than her former teammate. Destiny Davis sprinted across the finish line just after Anderson to score a second-place time of 24.36. Senior Torisha LaForce posted a sixth-best time at 25.93 seconds.
Anderson also claimed the top spot in the 400 meter sprint with a time of 54.87, nearly three seconds faster than Monroe College's Avon Samuels. In her last race at DaSilva Memorial Field, Kafi Ottley picked up the fifth-best mark, crossing the white stripe at 58.59 seconds.
Stephanie Gerland posted a second-place finish in the 1,500 meter run, setting a 4:49.04-second time to earn a spot on the podium. Nicole McCarthy joined Gerland on the stand, recording a time of 4:50.72. Fellow senior runner Shannon Page crossed after McCarthy, registering a fourth-best distance at 5:02.52.
Kayla Parker and Melissa Greaves secured second and third place, respectively, in the 400 meter hurdles. Parker's time of 1:09.46 is a new personal-best, slashing over two seconds off her previous mark set at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships (1:11.17). Greaves also posted a new career-best time of 1:10.55, nearly four seconds quicker than her time at the same event.
On Senior Day, Winona Peace took second place in the triple jump, hopping a distance of 10.90 meters to close out her final regular season meet.
Also in her last home sprint, Chenoa Sebastian charged down the track in 14.90 seconds to pick up a second-place finish in the 100 meter hurdles.
In the long jump, all three Red Storm athletes placed inside the top-five. Amanda Belgrave led the Red Storm with a distance of 5.38 meters, followed by Antonia Frazier in fourth at 5.23 meters. Peace secured the fifth-best mark, leaping 5.09 meters.
Eleftheria Christogeorgou set a new personal record in the high jump with a third-best leap at 1.50 meters.
