Red Storm drops season opener to the Bearcats
The St. John's women's soccer team dropped its season opener on Thursday, falling to Cincinnati by a score of 2-0.
St. John's played even with the Bearcats for the first 45 minutes of action before Vanessa DiNardo broke a scoreless deadlock in the 52nd minute. Twenty-one seconds later, DiNardo added another tally to give the Bearcats a two-goal lead.
The Red Storm and Cincinnati registered eight shots apiece, with the Bearcats holding a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Unanimous All-BIG EAST Preseason selection Zsani Kajan recorded four of the team's eight attempts, one of which was on target. Jessica Garziano, a product of Melville, N.Y., added two tallies in her first collegiate appearance for the Red Storm.
Newcomers Isabelle Aviza and Alex Madden also recorded a shot each for the Johnnies. Madden's lone attempt was on goal but the 5-foot-5 forward was denied by the Bearcats' goalkeeper Madison Less.
Naya Lipkens earned her first career start between the pipes for the St. John's. The redshirt freshman played the full 90 minutes in goal, making three saves in the process.
Down two, St. John's would not go quietly, as the Red Storm registered a pair of shots over the final minutes. The Johnnies' tries, however, were thwarted by Less and the Bearcats.
St. John's will return to action on Sunday, facing off against James Madison. First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
