Red Storm to host the Bulldogs on ESPN3 at 7 p.m.
The St. John's women's soccer team will look to claim its first victory of the 2019 season when it welcomes Yale to Belson Stadium for the Johnnies' home opener on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
The contest will be streamed live on ESPN3, available on WatchESPN.com and the Watch ESPN app. Scott Greene and Jack Benjamin will be on the call from Queens.
St. John's will look to snap its two-game skid in Friday's contest with the Bulldogs. The Red Storm suffered its first loss of the year last Thursday night at the hands Cincinnati before enduring a 2-1 double overtime loss to JMU on Sunday.
All-BIG EAST Preseason selection Zsani Kajan netted her first goal of the year in the Red Storm's loss to the Dukes. Jessica Garziano, the freshman from Melville, N.Y., picked up an assist on the play, for the first of her career.
Despite a pair of setbacks, redshirt freshman Naya Lipkens put forth a solid effort for the Red Storm in her first two contests between the pipes. The Bloomfield, Conn., native registered a combined 11 saves, for the third-highest total in the league.
Yale is coming off a 7-9-1 season that included a four-game skid to close out the 2018 campaign. The Bulldogs are in search of their first win since October 17, 2018 when they dominated Delaware State on the road, 6-2.
Yale returns senior captain Noelle Higginson, the team's leader in points from a season ago. After recording four goals and seven assists for 15 points last year, Higginson was selected to the All-Ivy League First Team. The Bulldogs also return last year's leading goal scorer Aerial Chavarin for her farewell season. The Oakland, Calif., native netted five goals and registered three assists last year, boosting her career point total to 45.
In the two programs last meeting, St. John's bested Yale, 2-0, on the road. Former Johnnies Samie Scaffidi and Claudia Cagnina each recorded a goal against the Bulldogs, while Shea Connors picked up two assists en route to the Red Storm's victory. Friday marks the sixth all-time meeting between the two squads, with the Johnnies leading the series, 3-2.
