Red Storm claims home opener in double overtime
Redshirt junior Zsani Kajan recorded her second goal of the season on Friday night in the 105th minute, lifting the St. John's women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Yale at Belson Stadium.
This marked the sixth game winning goal for the Budapest, Hungary, native in her Red Storm career.
For the second-straight match it took St. John's more than 90 minutes to decide an outcome. This time the Johnnies came out victorious, as both Kajan and Isabelle Aviza recorded a goal for the Red Storm. Maia Cabrera, Shannon Moore, Jessica Garziano and Sofia Ambrosio all registered assists on the evening.
Redshirt freshman Naya Lipkens earned her first win between the pipes for St. John's, making eight saves en route to the Johnnies' victory.
St. John's got on the board in the 31st minute, when freshman Aviza netted her first career goal to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead. The sequence began when Garziano sent a free kick into the box for Cabrera, who won the header sending the ball toward an open Aviza. The rookie from Medway, Mass., then buried the ball past the keeper to give the Red Storm a 1-0 edge.
Just 10 minutes into the second half, the Bulldogs knotted the game at one. Freshman Ellery Winkler drilled a low shot to the right side of the net for her first score of the season.
With seconds left to play in regulation, Yale appeared to have won the match sending one home. The goal was then called back as the referee ruled it offside, sending both programs into overtime.
After a back and forth affair through the first 10 minute period, the Johnnies converted in the first five minutes of double overtime. St. John's used a quick one-two touch pass from Moore to Ambrosio to set up the game-winning goal. Ambrosio sent a leading Kajan into open space, as she beat out Yale's keeper to seal the victory for St. John's.
The Johnnies will have a quick turnaround as they travel to South Bend, Ind., for a Sunday evening contest with Notre Dame. Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m.
