St. John’s Picks Up First Win of the Season Against NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. (Sept. 3, 2019) – The St. John's volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2019 season on Tuesday night, defeating NJIT in straight sets at the Wellness and Events Center.
The set scores were 25-21, 25-19 and 25-10, all in favor of the Red Storm. With the win, the Johnnies improved their record to 3-0 all-time against the Highlanders.
Amanda Sanabia recorded 11 digs along with three aces and two assists against NJIT. Senior Erica Di Maulo tallied 25 helpers for the Red Storm, while also registering six blocks and five digs.
Efrosini Alexakou had a strong showing for the Johnnies, recording a team-high eight kills. The Thessaloniki, Greece, native also added five digs in the Johnnies' win.
The first set opened up with a tight battle between both programs, as neither team was able to break a one-point deficit midway through the first. The Johnnies took a 19-16 lead late in the set and never looked back, taking the first frame, 25-21.
St. John's opened the second set on a 7-3 run behind a pair of kills from sophomore Rachele Rastelli. Despite an offensive spark for the Highlanders midway through the frame, the Johnnies held off NJIT's threat, to win the set, 25-19.
The Red Storm kicked off the final frame on a 4-0 run following a service ace from Sanabia. St. John's held NJIT to just 10 points in the final frame, as the squad continued to apply pressure on both sides of the ball and win the set, 25-10.
The Johnnies will look to build off tonight's win when they take on Canisius on Friday afternoon at the sixth-annual Jack Kaiser Classic inside Carnesecca Arena. The contest is slated for noon.
