Red Storm off to best start in more than a decade, to host Jaspers on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 5, 2019) – Fresh off a 2-0-0 weekend in North Carolina to kick of the 2019 campaign, the St. John's men's soccer team will host its home opener on Friday night, welcoming Manhattan to Belson Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
The game will be produced live by SJU-TV and can be viewed on ESPN3, available on the ESPN.com/watch and ESPN app. John Fanta and Scott Greene will have the call live from Queens.
St. John's earned a bevy of national recognition for its opening weekend efforts, checking in at no. 22 in the Soccer America poll and receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches and College Soccer News polls.
The Johnnies are off to their first 2-0-0 start in more than a decade, last kicking off the season with a pair of wins in 2008. That year, the Red Storm would rattle off an 8-0-2 start before finishing the season 19-3-3 and making the program's fourth appearance in the College Cup. The Red Storm's Sunday win over NC State marked the team's first victory over an ACC squad since 2010, when the Johnnies took down Virginia Tech, 2-0, in their season opener.
After anchoring the Red Storm in a pair of shutout efforts to begin the season, Luke Hansen was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for the first time in his collegiate career. The sophomore from West Windsor, N.J., also found spots on the TopDrawerSoccer and College Soccer News national teams of the week.
A pair of St. John's goalkeepers combined to keep the opposition off the score sheet this past weekend, as Jan Hoffelner and Luka Gavran each played a part in two clean sheets. Gavran made three of the team's four saves, including two in the first overtime period against NC State on Sunday evening.
Three different Johnnies found the back of the net on opening weekend. Matt Forster sparked the scoring with a free kick goal in the 20th minute against Appalachian State before Josiah Crawford added an insurance tally in the 71st. Tani Oluwaseyi, who assisted on Crawford's goal against the Mountaineers, scored the game winner against the Wolfpack in double overtime off an assist from Skage Simonsen. Despite playing just 94 of a possible 196 minutes this season, Oluwaseyi leads the team in points (3), shots (8) and shots on goal (5).
Since the venue opened in September of 2002, the Johnnies are 105-36-32 (.699) in games played at Belson Stadium.
Manhattan will make the short trek to Queens after suffering a loss to Lehigh in its season opener last Friday night in Bethlehem, Pa. Despite being outshot 20-7, the Jaspers lost by just one goal thanks in large part to the efforts of senior goalkeeper Marcellin Gohier, who stopped seven of the Mountain Hawks' eight tries on net. A two-time All-MAAC selection, Gohier was named the conference goalkeeper of the year in 2017 and sports a career goals against average of just 0.66.
The Jaspers return four players who scored four or more goals in 2018, led by junior forward Brandon Joseph-Baudi. Last season, Joseph-Baudi tallied five goals and three assists for a team that set a program record with 12 wins.
St. John's and Manhattan will meet during regular season play for the first time since 1996 when the two teams take the field on Friday. The Johnnies are 13-0-1 in 14 meetings all-time against the Jaspers dating back to 1979 and hold a 52-5 aggregate scoring advantage.
The Red Storm enjoyed its most lopsided victory in program history against Manhattan on Sept. 13, 1995, scoring a school record nine goals in a shutout victory at Gaelic Park.
The game will be produced live by SJU-TV and can be viewed on ESPN3, available on the ESPN.com/watch and ESPN app. John Fanta and Scott Greene will have the call live from Queens.
