St. John’s Heads to Staten Island for Penn 8-Team Select

The Johnnies enter the event for the fourth straight season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan 16, 2020) – After two strong showings at the Fordham Season Opener and the Bill Ward Invitational to kick off the 2019-20 season, the St. John's track & field team will travel to Staten Island's Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex this Saturday for the Penn 8-Team Select.
Penn, Cornell, Fairleigh Dickinson, FDU-Florham, Temple, Wagner, Iona, Fordham, Lehigh, Stony Brook, La Salle and Brown will be among the 12 programs with student-athletes participating in the event.
"We are looking forward to kicking off the 2020 track and field season at the Penn Select meet this weekend," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "Our team will need its best efforts as we will go against the reigning Ivy League Champion Penn. Our team is talented and well-prepared, so we are excited about seeing top performances this weekend."
The Red Storm racked up 23 podium finishes at the Bill Ward Invitational on Dec. 8. Senior sprinter Destiny Davis was named the BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week after earning a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.71 at the meet. Amarys Berry was also named the conference's field athlete of the week after posting a personal best distance of 14.82 meters in the shot put at the Fordham Opener. The senior also recorded a 14.27-meter throw to claim first place at the Bill Ward.
Juniors Leah Anderson and Avon Samuels also enter this weekend coming off notable performances at the Bill Ward. Anderson took first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.72 while Samuels captured the top spot in the 300-meter dash with a mark of 39.24.
Sophomore Ashley Walsh officially qualified for the ECAC Championships on Dec. 8 after scoring a distance of 16.31 meters in the weight throw.
St. John's finished in third place in the Penn 8-Team Select last season with Anderson stringing together a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 and 400-meter sprints. Davis also earned points for the Red Storm last year after placing fourth in the 200 meters.
Saturday's event is scheduled to kick-off at 4 p.m. Adult tickets can be purchased for $10 at the site while students will be charged $5 with their student ID present. Admission will be free for children 12 and under.
