Leah Anderson and Amarys Berry each earned a top spot on the podium
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (Jan 19, 2020) – The St. John's track & field team closed out the Penn 8-Team Select with two first-place finishes at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Junior sprinter Leah Anderson set a new personal record in the 60-meter dash after earning the top spot on the podium with a time of 7.56. Anderson's mark ranks first in the BIG EAST this season.
Senior Amarys Berry had another notable performance for the Johnnies after taking first place with a shot put throw of 14.80 meters. Berry also placed third in the weight throw with a distance of 16.86. The Hackensack, N.J., native continues to sit atop of the conference standings after recording a 14.82-mark at the Fordham Opener on Dec. 6.
As a team, the Red Storm finished in sixth place with 34 points while Penn closed out the day in first place with a score of 118.5.
"We had a typical opening meet with some big-time performances from Leah Anderson, Amarys Berry and some others that were just a little rusty after the long layoff between meets," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "Overall, our team competed well and will keep improving each week. We have much to look forward to in the weeks ahead."
Najeaya Singleton closed out the shot put finals in fourth place with a throw of 13.40 meters while Ashley Walsh's distance of 12.45 meters put her in seventh.
Destiny Davis finished the 200 meters in fifth place with a time of 24.96 to narrowly edge out Avon Samuels' mark of 24.97.
Sophomore Skyy Diop had a strong showing in the 400-meter sprints after placing eighth and posting a new personal best time of 57.39. Brianna Burkley grabbed first place in her heat but went on to finish twelfth in the 400-meter finals with a mark of 58.25.
The Red Storm returns to action at the Dr. Sanders Columbia Challenge on Jan. 24.
