St. John's Competes at the Philadelphia Fencing Invitational

The Johnnies finished 4-6 as a team and combined to win 142 individual matches
PHILADELPHIA (Jan. 19, 2020) – After hosting the annual St. John's Invitational at Taffner Field House the previous day, the St. John's men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday, finishing with a 4-6 record. The men's squad defeated fencers from Ohio State, Penn, and NYU to finish 3-2 as a collective unit. The women's program defeated NYU to finish the competition with a 1-4 record.
Fifth-year senior Katarzyna Lachman led the women's squad, securing victories in 13 of her 15 bouts. Dalton Walker and Maxime Tarasiewicz impressed for the men's side, each capturing 10 wins in saber and foil matches, respectively.
The men's saber side led the way with 27 wins this evening and went 4-1 as a team. Three of the four men's saber specialists that represented the Red Storm finished with winning records. Walker, Tariq Karam, and Sal Centanni picked up 24 of the 27 victories.
Tarasiewicz and Vadim Bazulev starred for the Johnnies in the men's foil competition, claiming 10 and eight wins, respectively. Maksym Kariuchenko, Ivan Zagoruiko, and Nathan Vaysberg led the team in the men's epee competition, finishing with 19 of the 23 wins this afternoon.
On the women's side, the epee team enjoyed a stellar day on the strip going 29-16 for the tournament. Nicole Gavrilko, Andrea Rizzi and Dominique Tannous collectively claimed 27 victories. Freshman Melanie Dolgonos won two of her four bouts in her third collegiate tournament.
In women's foil, fifth-year fencer Katarzyna Lachman and sophomore Arianna Pappone finished with 13-2 and 9-6 records, respectively, and guided the Red Storm with a 3-2 team record in the invitational. Senior Karolina Kaleta led the depleted women's saber unit with a 10-5 record for the tournament.
