Red Storm will look to win its third-straight conference game on Friday at 7 p.m.
Off to a 2-0 start in BIG EAST action, the St. John's women's basketball team will look to claim its third-straight conference victory on Friday evening when it welcomes Georgetown to Carnesecca Arena for a 7 p.m. contest.
The matchup between the Johnnies and the Hoyas will be available to live stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Ralph Bednarczyk and Mike Watts on the call from Queens.
St. John's (9-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) will look to remain undefeated at home on Friday night, as the Johnnies' 5-0 start in Queens matches their best since 2015-16. That year, the Red Storm claimed its first BIG EAST Championship since 1988. A win against the Hoyas on Friday night would give the Johnnies their best start at home since 2014-15, a campaign that saw them go 7-0 at Carnesecca Arena to start the season.
A victory over Georgetown would also mark the first 3-0 opening to conference play for the Red Storm since 2012-13, the year before the BIG EAST realignment and Joe Tartamella's first season as head coach. That year, the Johnnies went 11-5 in BIG EAST action to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
The Red Storm impressed in both of its victories to kick start conference play, defeating Xavier, 75-67, before blowing past Butler by 25, 67-42. Qadashah Hoppie shined for the Red Storm during the two-game road swing. After knocking down a team-high 18 points against the Musketeers, Hoppie exploded for 24 points against Butler on a 9-of-12 shooting, including a 6-for-8 showing from three-point range. In addition to her scoring prowess, Hoppie, who cracked the 20-point plateau for the fifth time this season, also averaged 2.5 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals during the first two conference games.
Freshman guard Leilani Correa is also boasting double figures through the team's first two BIG EAST matchups, averaging 10.0 points per game. The three-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week has been a spark off the bench for the Johnnies all season, draining 14.3 points per game for the second-highest total among rookies in the BIG EAST. Correa's 14.3 points per contest also rank her 17th overall among freshmen in the nation.
With Hoppie pacing the way, the Red Storm has put forth a stellar effort offensively this season, recording 75 or more points in eight of the team's 13 contests. Through games played on Tuesday, St. John's sits second in the league in scoring offense with 76.4 points per game. The Red Storm has been efficient from the floor this year, knocking down 45.8 percent of its chances for the best amongst BIG EAST teams.
Georgetown (4-9, 1-1 BIG EAST) enters Friday night's contest on the heels of a 62-53 victory over Providence on Tuesday afternoon. Graduate student Taylor Barnes and sophomore Tayanna Jones led the team with 14 points apiece, while senior Marvellous Osagie-Erese added 11 points to round out those who finished in double figures. As a team, Georgetown shot 36 percent (21-for-58) from the field.
Though 13 games this season, Barnes leads Georgetown with 12.0 points per game and is the lone Hoya averaging in double figures. Anita Kelava paces the squad on the glass, pulling down a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game.
Friday will mark the 65th all-time meeting between the Hoyas and the Red Storm, with St. John's leading the series, 35-29, including a 19-11 edge inside Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies have won 14 of the last 16 meetings, with the two team's splitting the series a season ago.
