St. John’s to Host Wagner for Wednesday Matinee

Defending BIG EAST champs hosts its second-consecutive NEC opponent in Wagner on Wednesday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 21, 2020) – After beginning the 2020 spring campaign with a comfortable 7-0 sweep over Sacred Heart on Saturday, the St. John's men's tennis team returns to the court on Wednesday to square off with its second Northeast Conference opponent in a row in Wagner.
Wednesday's contest with the Seahawks is scheduled to start at noon inside the Cunningham Park tennis bubble.
The Johnnies enjoyed an easy victory on Saturday in their home opener against Sacred Heart. Dylan Loru and Udayan Bhakar opened up doubles play with a 6-2 win in the No. 3 match. Giuseppe De Camelis and Ignacio Garcia secured the first point of the afternoon for the Johnnies as they knocked off Sacred Heart's Matic Podlipnik and Lucca Casalduc Pla on the No. 2 court, 6-3.
Playing in the No. 1 singles slot, Garcia bested Sacred Heart's Seji Hosokawa, 6-2, 6-2. Charlie James would need three sets to take home the victory in the second flight match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Igor Maslov, De Camelis and Loru picked up their first singles wins of the season from flights 4-6, to guarantee the 7-0 sweep for the Red Storm.
Wagner enters the 2020 spring campaign after compiling a 7-10 overall record and 2-2 mark in conference play a year ago. The NEC runner-up Seahawks are anchored by seniors Dylan Walters and Siddharth Anand, who combined to win 23 singles contests a season ago.
Following Wednesday's bout, the Red Storm will travel to West Point, N.Y. this weekend for three matches in a two-day span against Marist, Connecticut and Army West Point on Jan. 25 and 26.
