Leah Anderson and Amarys Berry each seek leading marks for the second straight week
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2020) – After capping off the Penn 8-Team Select with a pair of first place finishes this past weekend, the St. John's track & field team will continue its 2020 campaign when the team heads to the Armory for the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge on Friday and Saturday.
The Johnnies will have 21 athletes competing in 12 different events across the two-day meet, beginning tomorrow at 10 a.m.
St. John's will compete against 20 programs from around the country at the invitational, including Ohio State, UCLA, BYU, South Carolina, Duke and Penn State.
"We are very excited to compete at the Columbia Challenge, which is one of the premiere meets in the country," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "Some of the top teams from around the nation come to the Armory and it gives us a chance to showcase our talented team. Our sprinters and throwers are poised to put up nationally-ranked performances."
Leah Anderson enters the Columbia Challenge after posting a 7.56 mark in the 60-meter dash at the Penn 8-Team Select. Anderson's time put her atop the BIG EAST leaderboard and ranks within the top 100 in the nation. Anderson also captured a top 10 ECAC qualifying time with her performance.
The junior sprinter will transition back to the 200 and 400-meter dashes on Saturday before closing out the meet in the women's 4x400-meter relay with teammates Brianna Burkley, Avon Samuels, Skyy Diop and Destiny Davis.
Senior Amarys Berry will look to capture the top spot in the shot put for the second straight week after taking first place at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Jan. 18 with a distance of 14.80 meters. Berry now holds the two longest marks in the BIG EAST this season with her mark of 14.82 meters at the Fordham Opener ranking first in the conference.
Joining Berry in the circle this weekend will be Bernadette McGowan, Samantha Morillo, Ashley Walsh and Najeaya Singleton, all of whom are slated to compete in the shot put on Friday.
The Red Storm will kick off the meet with the women's shot put beginning at 11:45 a.m. All of the action from the event can be followed by clicking here.
