Anderson ranks 16th in the NCAA for the 400-meter dash
New York, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2020) – After taking on a strong field featuring some of the country's top programs, Leah Anderson shined for the St. John's track & field team at the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge on Saturday.
The junior sprinter placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.53 before earning a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters at 24.23. Anderson's 400-meter mark ranks 16th in the nation while her time in the 200 meters puts her at 36th. The Mount Vernon, N.Y., product also sits in first place on the BIG EAST leaderboard in both events as well as the 60-meter dash.
"I thought our team showed progress from last week and we will need to continue to do so as we prepare for the Metropolitan Championships next week," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "Leah Anderson was once again her awesome self with great performances in the 400 and 200 meters. Amarys Berry also made the finals in the shot put. We won a number of races and that should build some confidence going into the Metropolitan Championships."
Avon Samuels had a strong showing in the 400-meter dash after placing 12th with an ECAC qualifying time of 56.21. The junior also grabbed a first-place finish in her heat for the 200 meters and finished 30th overall with a mark of 25.10.
Samuels placed second in her heat and 13th overall with Brianna Burkley, Destiny Davis and Skyy Diop in the 4x400-meter relay, registering a time of 3:50.36. The mark sits at 19th on the ECAC qualifying list.
Senior thrower Amarys Berry earned a spot in the finals on Friday for the shot put and picked up an eighth-place finish with a mark of 14.27 meters. UCLA's Alyssa Wilson led the field with a distance of 17.39 meters, the third-longest mark in the country this season.
The Red Storm returns to action when the team heads back to the Armory for the Metropolitan Championships on Jan. 30.
