St. John’s to Host Drexel for Wednesday Matinee

The defending BIG EAST champs look to capture its sixth-straight victory with a win on Wednesday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2020) – After wrapping up three wins against Marist, Army, and UConn in West Point, N.Y., this past weekend, the St. John's men's tennis team returns to the court on Wednesday to square off with Drexel at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., at 1 p.m.
The Johnnies enjoyed three decisive victories in their first road trip of the spring season. In the three Red Storm triumphs over Marist, Army, and UConn, the defending BIG EAST champions combined to capture 14 matches, compared to having lost just one match.
Udayan Bhakar, this week's BIG EAST Tennis Athlete of the Week, led the Johnnies with five wins over the weekend, securing two of his three singles wins in the No. 1 slot. The Bikaner, India, native wrapped up the victory for the Red Storm in his top-flight contest on Saturday as he defeated Marist's No.1 Lars Schouten, 6-4, 7-6. Bhakar also clinched a St. John's win on Sunday when he knocked off Army's No.4, A.J. Woodman, 6-4, 6-0.
Giuseppe De Camelis continues to dominate his opponents this year, boasting a 4-0 record in singles play to start his collegiate career. The freshman defeated Marist's John Oxner, 6-0, 6-2, followed by a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Thomas Lake of Army on Sunday.
Aditya Vashistha made his 2020 season debut over the weekend, finishing 2-0 in doubles play with Bhakar as his partner in both wins over Army and UConn. In his first singles match of the season, the Bikaner, India, native went unfinished in a tightly contested No. 1 singles contest with Army's Myles Conlin (7-5, 1-0).
Head Coach Dillon Pottish's team has been exceptional this season, posting an 11-1 record in its first five contests. The duos of Ignacio Garcia/De Camelis, Charlie James/Igor Maslov, Bhakar/Vashistha and Bhakar/Dylan Loru have all posted 2-0 records to start the 2020 campaign.
Drexel started the 2020 spring campaign with a road loss to Princeton last Sunday. The Dragons compiled an 11-10 overall record, finishing last season as a quarterfinalist in the CAA Championships. Drexel is anchored by junior Sanil Jagtiani and senior Youssef Lahlou, who combined to win 34 singles contests a season ago.
Following Wednesday's bout, the Red Storm will travel to Tucson, Ariz., on Friday for two matches on Friday and Saturday against Arizona and Cal Poly on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
