St. John’s Drops First Match of the Season at No. 25 Arizona, 5-2

No. 44 Aditya Vashistha bounced No. 36 Filip Malbasic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4
TUCSON, Ariz. (Jan. 31, 2020) – The St. John's men's tennis team saw its six-match winning streak come to an end Friday night as the Red Storm fell to No. 25 Arizona, 5-2, at the Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.
The Red Storm and Wildcats split the first two doubles contests to force a decisive third match to claim the lone doubles point. After Louis-nils Michel and Charlie James dropped their tilt on the No. 2 court to Arizona's Carlos Hassey/Alejandro Reguant, 6-1, the duo of Ognjen Trejgut and Ignacio Garcia leveled the match on the No. 1 court, defeating Arizona's Igor Karpovets/Jonas Ziverts, 6-3. The Wildcats earned a 1-0 lead with a win in the No. 3 bout as Udayan Bhakar and Aditya Vashistha fell in a hard-fought battle against Filip Malbasic/Nick Lagaev, 6-4.
The No. 25 Arizona Wildcats lengthened its lead over the Johnnies to 4-0, claiming three straight-set victories on the No. 3, 2, and 4 courts, respectively.
No. 44 Vashistha defeated his second ranked opponent of the season, toppling No. 36 Filip Malbasic in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. The Bikaner, India, native is now 2-2 in matches against ranked opponents in his junior season.
St. John's second win came in the No. 5 bout, as Michel secured his first victory of the spring season over Arizona's Carlos Hassey, 4-6, 6-2, 12-10.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish's squad will wrap up its weekend in Arizona on Saturday as the Red Storm square off with Cal Poly at the Robson Tennis Center at 1 p.m. ET.
