St. John’s Travels West to Face No. 25 Arizona and Cal Poly This Weekend

The Red Storm squares off with its first ranked opponent of the season in No. 25 Arizona on Friday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 30, 2020) – After securing its sixth-straight victory on Wednesday afternoon over Drexel to start the season, the St. John's men's tennis team will fly out west for the first time this spring to battle No. 25 Arizona and Cal Poly this weekend.
The Johnnies will square off with No. 25 Arizona on Friday at 4 p.m. ET, followed by a matchup on Saturday against Cal Poly at 1 p.m. ET. Both matches will be held at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.
No. 25 Arizona enters the 2020 spring campaign with a 5-1 after compiling a 17-8 overall record and 3-5 mark in conference play a year ago. The Wildcats are coming off their biggest win of the season against Notre Dame and their only loss against No. 8 TCU during the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Fort Worth, Texas. Arizona is anchored by freshman Nick Lagaev and junior No. 36 Filip Malbasic who share the lead in total wins and dual wins with 14 and five, respectively.
Cal Poly has only completed two matches in 2020, splitting both decisions. In Cal Poly's lone win over Grand Canyon, the Mustangs claimed five of the six singles matches. Antoine Noel and Fernando Fonseca carried Cal Poly to a 6-1 victory over Grand Canyon, outlasting their opponents in three sets in the No. 1 and 2 slots, respectively.

The Red Storm clinched the opening point in doubles play by winning all three of its bouts for the fifth time this season. Ognjen Trejgut and Ignacio Garcia started the afternoon with a victory in the No. 1 doubles slot, edging Drexel's Alvaro Cruz Chomorro and Djordje Janackovic, 6-2. Giuseppe De Camelis and Charlie James secured the first point of the afternoon for the Johnnies as they knocked off Xandy Hammitt and Juan Manuel Sanchez on the No. 2 court, 6-4. Udayan Bhakar and Aditya Vashistha picked up St. John's third doubles triumph, defeating Drexel's No. 3 duo Gustav Wogen and Hugo Brungs, 6-3.
The Red Storm continued its impressive play, cruising to the 5-0 win over the Dragons by taking eight of the nine sets in singles play. Tregjut, the senior from Belgrade, Serbia, secured his second singles triumph of the season, defeating Drexel's No. 3 Djordje Janackovic, 7-5, 6-1.
James also needed an extra point to claim the first set of his singles tilt with Alvaro Cruz Chamorro. The sophomore from Stamford, England, wrapped up his match on the No. 6 court in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
Bhakar, this week's BIG EAST Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, gave the Johnnies their third singles triumph of the day, bouncing Gustav Wogen in the No. 2 slot, 6-3, 6-4.
De Camelis sealed the victory for Red Storm in the third set of his No. 5 matchup, narrowly edging Juan Manuel Sanchez, 6-3, 3-6, 10-3. Vashishta and Garcia's singles matches went unfinished in the No. 1 and 4 slots, respectively.
After the weekend road trip, the Johnnies will return to Flushing Meadows, N.Y. to host East Carolina at the USTA National Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 7 at 12 p.m. ET.
