St. John’s Outlasts Cal Poly in Arizona, 4-3

The Red Storm split the weekend road trip with the win over the Mustangs; move to 7-1 on the year
TUCSON, Ariz. (Feb. 1, 2020) – After falling in a tightly-contested bout against No. 25 Arizona on Friday, the St. John's men's tennis team bounced back with a 4-3 victory over Cal Poly at the Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.
The Red Storm and Mustangs split the first two doubles contests to force a decisive third match to claim the lone doubles point. Cal Poly's Fernando Fonseca and Gary Vardanyan knocked off Louis-nils Michel and Charlie James in the No. 2 slot to take the first of three doubles bouts. Aditya Vashistha and Udayan Bhakar leveled the round with a 7-5 victory over Cal Poly's Antoine Noel and Alexis Delisle in the No. 3 tilt. The Red Storm valiantly battled to gain the doubles point as Ognjen Trejgut and Ignacio Garcia outdueled Joe Leather and Roman Shenkiryk, 7-6.
In singles play, No. 44 Vashistha continued his impressive form with his second victory of the road trip, toppling Antoine Noel in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Ignacio Garcia also took care of his opponent in straight sets, bouncing Cal Poly's Alex Stater in the No. 4 slot, 7-5, 6-1.
The Mustangs refused to go home without a fight as they claimed the next three singles matches to force a 3-3 deadlock with one contest left to finish. Cal Poly clinched its first point of the contest when Michel dropped his No. 5 bout to Gary Vardanyan in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
Cal Poly's second and third wins needed three sets as Trejgut and Giuseppe De Camelis fell to Joe Leather (6-1, 1-6, 2-6) and Cambell Nakayama (3-6, 6-3, 2-6) in the No. 3 and 6 slots, respectively.
The Johnnies sealed the victory on the No. 2 court as Bhakar, this week's BIG EAST Tennis Athlete of the Week, earned the team's fourth point with a dramatic 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 triumph over Fernando Fonseca.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish's squad returns home to host East Carolina at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., on Friday, Feb. 7 at noon ET.
