Erin Brown picks up first career victory
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Feb. 14, 2020) – The St. John's softball team snapped its five-game skid with a 6-1 win over Binghamton before falling to Texas A&M, 4-0, on Friday at Davis Diamond.
Freshman Erin Brown captured her first career win, tossing a complete game, three-hitter. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native registered five strikeouts while allowing just one run to pick up the victory.
Game 1
Sophomore Peyton Cody provided half of the Johnnies' production against Binghamton (0-2), drilling her first home run of the season, a three-run shot, over the center field wall.
Kaitlin Mattera registered her team-high third multi-hit game of 2020, going 2-for-3 at the dish with a run scored. Laura Delgado and Kalei Sorensen also recorded hits against the Bears.
After a scoreless opening frame and Brown downing the Bears in order in the top of the second, the Johnnies (1-6) capitalized on a trio of Binghamton miscues to take the lead. After a Gabriella Conca walk and steal, the Red Storm's Delgado and Amelia Ditolvo reached on errors before bringing a pair of runs across the plate and going up by two. Sorensen registered the first hit of the game by driving an RBI single to left and boosting the St. John's advantage to three, 3-0.
The Red Storm and the Bears exchanged blank third and fourth innings before Brown shut Binghamton down in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Johnnies doubled their run total on one swing of the bat from Cody. Following a walk to Elyse Morris and a single up the middle by Mattera, Cody drove a 1-1 pitch to deep center field, extending the Red Storm's advantage, 6-0.
Binghamton tagged St. John's with a run, 6-1, in the top of the seventh but Brown proved to be too much and closed out the victory with a punchout.
Game 2
St. John's dropped the night cap to Texas A&M, 4-0.
The Red Storm and the Aggies (5-3) exchanged a pair of scoreless innings to open the game before St. John's registered its first hit in the third frame on a single up the middle by Kaitlyn Lologo.
In the bottom half of the third, Texas A&M's Haley Lee hit a two-run home run to give the Aggies at 2-0 lead.
Following an empty fourth frame from both teams, St. John's threatened the Aggies' lead in the fifth. Cody led off with a single up the middle before Delgado lined a grounder through the left side to put runners on first and second with one out. The Red Storm battled in the next two at bats, but could not push a runner across the plate.
Texas A&M added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-0 advantage before keeping St. John's off the board in the final inning.
The Red Storm will return to action tomorrow morning when the team takes on Lamar at 11:00 a.m. ET, followed by a matchup with Binghamton at 6:15 p.m. ET.
