Tariq Karam Places Third at the Junior Olympic Championships

Karam finishes the competition as a semifinalist, posting a 10-2 record
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Feb. 18, 2020) - In the annual Junior Olympic Championships this past weekend in Columbus, Ohio, Tariq Karam shined for the Red Storm with a third-place finish in the junior men's saber tournament.
The Seattle native cruised through round one of pool play with a 5-1 record and outscored his foes by 15 touches. Earning the No. 31 seed going into table play, Karam won five-straight bouts to advance into the semifinal round, moving to 10-1 on the day.
Facing Nockoloz Lortkipanidze, who went on to be the runner-up of the competition, Karam fell 15-11, to finish in the top three in the men's saber draw. The freshman finished with an impressive 10-2 record, outscoring some of the best junior fencers across the country by 41 touches.
Fencing alongside his Red Storm teammate, Nathan Vaysberg recorded five victories and earned a 46th place finish.
Next up, the Red Storm returns to the piste this Sunday, Feb. 23, in Philadelphia for the Temple Invitational for its final collegiate invitational before the regional championships on March 8.
