Gretchen Bowie hits a pair of home runs and her 10th career triple
BEAUMONT, Texas (Feb. 21, 2020) – Despite a stellar performance at the dish from Gretchen Bowie, the Red Storm fell to Northern Colorado and Lamar on the opening day of the Cardinal Classic in Beaumont.
The senior captain unleashed a combined 6-for-8 showing at the dish and tallied a pair of home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored. The Johnnies' third baseman now has 35 career round-trippers, sitting just nine behind program leader and former teammate Krystal Puga.
Game 1
St. John's dropped the opening game of the Cardinal Classic to Northern Colorado, 8-7.
Kalei Sorensen continued her stretch of hot hitting with a 3-for-3 performance at the dish with a walk. The Valencia, Calif., native registered her second multi-hit game in the last three contests, her most recent coming against Binghamton on Feb. 15.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Lologo and freshman Amy Mallah put forth multi-hit games, each registering a pair of singles against the Bears. Mallah, who made her first career start, also recorded her first collegiate hit in the third inning.
St. John's (2-10) and Northern Colorado (3-9) exchanged a pair of blank frames to start the game despite the Johnnies' ability to put runners on base and in scoring position. In the bottom of the second, the Red Storm worked the Bears' starter into a bases loaded scenario after Sorensen, Mallah and Lologo registered singles but could not punch through.
Northern Colorado scored the game's first run on a Johnnies' miscue that came off of a double steal.
The Johnnies knotted the game at one on the back of Bowie, who did all the work herself to score. The Sparta, N.J., native reached on a single up the middle before stealing second. In the process of swiping third, the Bears' catcher threw the ball down the third base line, prompting a swift break by Bowie towards the plate.
In the top of the fourth, Northern Colorado went up, 3-1, on a single up the middle before shutting out the Red Storm in the bottom half.
St. John's rallied in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at three apiece. Bowie led off the inning with her 10th career triple, pulling her to within one of the program record (11) set by Gail DiMartino during her four-year stint from 1988-91. Two batters later, Peyton Cody drove a single up the middle to knock Bowie in from third, cutting its deficit to one, 3-2. Following Sorensen's third base hit of the afternoon, Lologo singled to the left-center gap to bring Cody home and knot the game at three.
The Bears scored five unanswered runs in the top half of the sixth to take a five-run advantage, 8-3.
The Johnnies fought back with a four-run response in the bottom of the sixth. Following a pair of singles by Mallah and Natalie Giroux to start the inning, Amelia Ditolvo recorded a RBI base knock to left field to cut the Johnnies' deficit to four, 8-4. In the next at-bat, Bowie crushed a three-run dinger to left field and pulled the Red Storm to within one, 8-7.
St. John's threatened in the final inning to complete the comeback, putting runners on with two outs but lost to the Bears in game one.
Game 2
St. John's fell in heartbreaking fashion, 5-4, to Lamar despite a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the dish from Kaitlin Mattera.
After a scoreless first inning, the Johnnies cracked the 0-0 tie in the second. Mattera singled up middle before being pinch ran for by Meisha Murray. The Red Storm's pinch runner swiped second and third before scoring on an RBI groundout from Giroux and giving St. John's its first lead of the day, 1-0.
Following a blank third frame, St. John's tacked on a run in the fourth. Mattera smacked her second hit of the evening to right, only to be moved to third on a Giroux double. In the next at-bat, Mattera crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give the Red Storm a 2-0 advantage.
The Cardinals (6-6) were held off the board in the bottom half of the fourth before the Johnnies extended their lead in the fifth.
Bowie drilled her second homer of the day, a solo shot, off of the scoreboard in left field to extend the lead to 3-0. Two batters later, Mattera knocked in Cody from second and pushed the advantage to four, 4-0.
Lamar responded with five unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 5-4 advantage and down the Johnnies.
