St. John’s Bounces Xavier for first BIG EAST Win, 6-1

The defending BIG EAST Champions claimed its first BIG EAST triumph of the season over Xavier
CINCINNATI (Feb. 21, 2020) – The St. John's men's tennis team picked up its first BIG EAST victory of the season and 11th win of the 2020 campaign on Friday, defeating Xavier, 6-1, at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club.
The Red Storm clinched the first point of the evening with two doubles wins on the No. 1 and 2 courts. Ignacio Garcia and Ognjen Trejgut started things off as they defeated Xavier's Srdan Pejic and Brett Winters in the No. 1 slot, 6-2. St. John's claimed its second doubles triumph on the No. 2 court as Louis-nils Michel and Djuro Opacic knocked off Matthew Graft and Shashank Reddy, 6-4.
The Johnnies would go on to claim five of the six singles bouts en route to a commanding 6-1 victory over the Musketeers.
Opacic and No. 57 Aditya Vashistha earned the Johnnies' first two singles triumphs of the day, bouncing Michael Lee and Brett Winters in the No. 6 and 1 slots, 6-2, 6-1, and 6-3, 6-2, respectively.
Garcia and Udayan Bhakar followed with a couple more straight-set victories in the No. 3 and 5 matches, increasing St. John's win total to five. Garcia earned his eight singles win of the season with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Matthew Graft. Bhakar claimed his first victory from the No. 5 slot, toppling Aaron Thompson 7-6, 6-4.
Trejgut would need three sets in his victories to seal the Red Storm's 6-1 triumph over Xavier. In the No. 2 bout, the Belgrade, Serbia, native forced a third set after dropping the first set, 4-6. The senior would settle down and go on to clinch the final two sets for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The Musketeers avoided the sweep with a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 victory by Shashank Reddy over Michel on the No. 4 court.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish's squad will battle Butler in Indianapolis on Sunday, Feb. 23, with a chance to grab two-straight BIG EAST triumphs to start conference play.
