QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2020) – After capturing two wins in New England against Boston University and Bryant last weekend, the St. John's men's tennis team returns to action this weekend with its first two BIG EAST contests of the 2020 season at Xavier and Butler.
The Johnnies will start their weekend with a match against Xavier on Friday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m. ET, followed by a meeting with Butler on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. ET.
The Red Storm enter Friday's bout with a 10-2 overall record, sweeping Boston University, 4-0, before knocking off Bryant last Sunday, 4-1.
Aditya Vashistha, this week's BIG EAST Tennis Athlete of the Week and No. 57 player in the Oracle/ITA Rankings, is coming off another dominant weekend. On Friday, the Bikaner, India, native toppled Boston University's David Bogatin in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. The junior secured his second singles win of the road trip on Sunday, bouncing Bryant's Wilson Dong in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. Vashistha's two singles victories in the top slot move him to 5-0 on the season.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish's team has been highly successful in singles play throughout the 2020 campaign, boasting a 40-17 record in its first 12 contests. Udayan Bhakar, Ignacio Garcia, and Giuseppe De Camelis lead the squad with the most singles wins so far and have provided a huge boost behind Vashistha, accounting for 21 of the Red Storm's 40 singles victories this year.
The Johnnies have been just as impressive in doubles play this spring, capturing victories in 25 of their 31 total bouts. Garcia and Ognjen Trejgut have been unmatched so far in their five No. 1 doubles tilts. Vashistha and Bhakar have racked up victories in five of their seven doubles bouts on the No. 3 court.
On Friday, the Johnnies will travel to Cincinnati for an afternoon clash at the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club. St. John's has won each of the last five matchups against the Musketeers, including a 4-1 triumph in last year's contest. Xavier enters the weekend with a 4-5 record, having lost to Indiana in their last tilt.
After Xavier, St. John's will play a Butler squad that comes into Sunday's contest with a 10-4 record, recently claiming wins in three of its last matches. In Butler's 5-1 triumph over Wright State, the Bulldogs rallied to win the first four singles contests after dropping the doubles point. Butler racked up five-consecutive straight-set victories in the No. 2-6 slots to earn its tenth win of the spring.
After its two tilts with Xavier and Butler this weekend, St. John's will wrap up its seven-match road swing next weekend with a meeting against Penn at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m. ET.
